Woman pleads not guilty in adoption scam case

A North Liberty woman arrested in June in an alleged adoption scam
pleaded not guilty Wednesday to second-degree theft, online court
records show.
Shannon Kay Schaffer, 42, is accused of posing as a pregnant mother
whose baby was to be adopted by a Texas couple.
According to police records, Schaffer contacted the couple in
January, sent photos and claimed to have a delivery date in March.
The couple purchased a plane ticket, cell phone, watch, birth mother
book and adoption papers for a combined cost of $1,030, records show.
Schaffer told police that she is not pregnant and does not have any
children to put up for adoption, police reports show. A trial date
has not been set. She faces a maximum 5-year sentence and a $7,500
fine if convicted.
