A young couple has asked us to adopt their unborn child. This came out of the blue. My husband and I have talked about adopting a child but never pursued it. We don't have a child together, but I have 3 children and he as 2 children. They range from 12-22 years old. We are very interested but don't have a clue as of where to start. Any suggestions as of where to find out how to do this? Agency? Lawyer? I am clueless. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hey Ann how exciting. Since you know this couple all you'll need is a home study and an attorney. If you go through an agency they'll charge you $15,000.-$20,000. and you've already done all the work, so avoid that route. Most agencies offer a la carte services which means that although you will not adopt through them they will do your home study which will probably cost around $1,200.00 and then the adoption attorney will cost about $3,000.00. I'm not entirely sure but you may be able to petition the courts for custody and then pursue adoption later on bypassing the adoption chain all together. You should definitely call an adoption attorney and get a legal opinion. Good luck and congratulations.
