Hi, my youngest autistic child is on the quite severe end of the spectrum. These past few months we have noticed he has become alot angrier. He has terrible mood swings and bouts of agressive challenging behaviour.
We are seeing our paediatritian and I dont know whether to consider any medical interventions as it is becoming increasingly harder to cope.

My son has been on Risperdal since last march. I waited a long time to make that decision, because I kept thinking, maybe it's not that bad. I don't know your son's age. My son is 15 and I guess puberty made things even worse than before.
I have seen improvement in behavior, but whenever he is sick, he still bites and hurts people.
I think medication is worth a try, we are still on a very low dose.
Hope this helps!

My son began taking Risperdal 6 months ago and has made huge gains. It was a very difficult decision.....wich many people would not agree with. However, the decrease he has shown in self abusive and aggressive behavior is enourmous. This medication decreased has helped him to deal with frustration and has decreased aggressions by over 250 per day. It has not been a cure as he still has his issues and is still VERY autistic....but he is a much happier little boy with the help of the medication. He takes a very small dose.......only 025 ml 2 times per day. I almost didn't try it.......thankfully, I did! It is not right for every child......just the same as the Gluten/Casein Free diet (which we tried for 16 weeks with no results, and every other 'fix' which is out there........ If you are at a point that nothing else you have tried is helping....go for it. Good luck!

My son has been taking Risperdol for about 3 months now. He has pdd-nos. It was also the hardest decision we ever made. Since starting on the risperdol, our son is a new person. He can control his anger alot better at school and is so much happier. It is like a switch went off in his head and now things make sense to him. He even eats different foods now! That is one drawback though. He has gained weight since starting the med. and is constantly starving.

Hi everyone thanks for the info -
BlakesMom how old is your son? Mine is only 5. I dont know if the paediatritian will consider him too young.
We do also have alot of food issues with him, so I hope that it may be a positive thing with trying new foods, 70% of his diet is made up of sweet things. I would just hope he wouldn't gain too much weight - he is very active though.

Hi,
Since my son is very active, he hasn't gained weight( he does eat all day though). one side effect is constipation, not fun!
