Hi everybody, just writing because I know we always wrtie one another looking for answers to the difficult stuff so I thougth I'd write some follow up good news. My little guy (he's now 5 1/2 )is potty trained!! He goes on his own without us having to tell him. He even tries wiping himself!! Does anybody know if this is an indicator on how he'l lpick up other stuff, or because he is autistic (and still pretty much non-verbal) this "clicking" of the potty training really doesn't inply his ability to grasp??? Either way, I am happy for no more diapers. But your advice as usual is appreciated. Take care-

Dianna, That is huge. I think the fact that he gets the concept of going to the bathroom and all that comes with it is awsome. He is well on his way to grasping all sorts of things.

That is amazing potty training is so difficult. My Ryan is 6 next month he is potty trained, he also enjoys making some of his own food he likes to prepare it popcorn in the microwave was a hit, I admit we popped the whole box!

I believe that he is grasping the idea, and it's great news. Kurtis was 4 and a bit before he was potty trained and one day it clicked ( although he went straight from nappy to toilet) but we were relieved too! Sometimes it takes a bit longer that's all. Our kids learn by route and that's the way it is.
Kurtis picks up most things by route- memory and routine and still does so maybe your little one is doing the same.

Hello dianna,
My son -who just turned 21 and has Autism- graasped the idea early on (~3yrs of age) and from there many other self care necessities through the years; thought potty trained around 3, he smeared his underwear often but that too cleared up in a year or so; it was no big deal really, just sent along an extra pair of underwear with him to school along with wipes--i think he was afraid to have bowel movements, which most children are at some point when they are learning to go to the bathroom (kids without Autism that is-all kids), so that is great!
