Hello! I'm 26 and 23 weeks pregnant...I'm also the babysitter of a 1 1/2 year old girl. I know she's young still but I'm still a bit worried as all the children in my family have been far more advanced than she at that age. She doesn't try and say anything really. She throws alot of tantrums. She points at things and mumbles. When you ask her what she wants she just gets angry and starts screaming. Now I don't yell at her, I just try to explain when she can't have something and when she won't stop I tell her I'm going in the other room. She always follows and when I'm lucky stops screaming. Now I could be worrying over nothing, but I would like some insight if you could...please. Thanks

Babies develop at their own pace, some more quickly than others. However, you should consider an evaluation for autism if any of the following apply:

Your child does not babble or coo by 12 months of age.
Your child does not gesture, such as point or wave, by 12 months of age.
Your child does not say single words by 16 months.
Your child does not say two-word phrases on his or her own (rather than just repeating what someone else says) by 24 months.
Your child has lost any language or social skills (at any age).

If she's pointing at things to draw your attention to what she wants then that's a very good sign. The worry that *I* would have is that there might be something wrong with her hearing. If she's not hearing well then when people speak to her it may sound like mumbles and that is how she would speak back.
