ok these are just little things that I did....when showering I made sure to aviod my nipples and such and when getting out I would let them air dry, used lanolin at night and also pummped a bit. not sure if anything really prepares you for breastfeeding but those were the things that seemed to help me prior to and after (during the sorness of incorrect latching and so forth). best advice.....get in contact with a lactation consultant before and after gving birth and most importantly while in the hospital...ask many questions and be prepared to learn a lot....some babies are pros as with my first but, then others need some help as with my second. good luck!

i don't recommend pumping before the baby comes. two reasons 1- in the last few weeks of pregnacy it can start labor early and 2- it will hurt! i do agree with using the lanolin also. once baby is here and your nipples are sore, rub the extar breastmilk on them and let them air dry. also keep using the lanolin. good luck

I didn't toughen my nipples because I read that it wasn't neccesary. I was just fine. My nipples hurt for about a week and no more. The best thing for the soreness is after your milk comes in squeez some out and let it dry on your nipples!! Works like a charm. That's when the pain went away, and I had tried cooling patches and lanolin.....but the milk is what worked! I've been doing great every since! Good luck and do NOT give up because before you know it the pain is gone.

My mother-in-law told me to toughen up my nipples as well, that is just an old wives tale. And everyone is different, so not everyone experiences pain when they start breastfeeding. I aggree with melissa get in touch with a lactaion specialist if you have any questions or problems, they are awesome people.

I did not do anything to toughen my nipples either. I did use lanolin sparingly after I started breastfeeding if I was feeling especially tender. I also would express just a little milk and use that to rub on the nipples and that is what worked best. With your first feeding at the hospital, don't be afraid to ask for help getting your baby latched on correctly. That is the biggest help to keep soreness away. Get them on there right from the get-go. Just keep your chin up and the soreness goes away pretty quickly. I have heard that cabbage leaves can also help with soreness, if you need them.

My husband would tweak my nipples throughout the whole pregnancy. I never had a problem with sore nipples while nursing either of my kids.
