Hello: I am a family doc. One of patients has a lovely child with autism. The parnets are divorced with the father suffering from anger and alcohol problems. The lawyer for the mother called and said that the father now has had treatment and wants the court to order visitation. The lawyer wants to know what guidelines i suggest that he draw for the father. Any suggestions?
Thank you, Paul Hart

No Alcohol or drugs, no smoking either if he is a smoker. Talk to the childs therapist s OT[SPeech , Pt , see what they think should be the guidelines. putting a child with autism into a stressful situaton is not a good thing for the child. It also depends how severe the autism is. best of luck i your decisions Dr. I have a child with tetrology of fallot and she also has had a stroke. 11 yrs old and 14 heart surgerys god its tuff but we do what we have to....

I would approach this situation with extreme caution!!! The mother may be looking at a kidnapping situation. I watched this same situation unfold with my sister. I think this mother needs to set very strict rules for the father to follow until he can be trusted.
For example: they need to set a time and place to meat to pick up and drop off the kids like every other Saturday from 12:00 to 5:00 they could meet in a public place like the police station. She needs to tell him he could not go out of the city with the kids and make the police aware of the situation. And make sure he is not drunk or been drinking and let him know if the kids say he was drinking while the kids are in his care she will not let him see the kids. He needs to go to AA meetings, anger management, and child development classes. He needs to be able to hold down a decent job, keep a suitable place to live, and keep for a certain time. Then and only then would I let him have anything to do with those kids.
