I read in the journals that some people are 1cm dilated etc how do you know this and when do they start checking? Does that internal Exam hurt, how long does it take?

Your Dr. will start to do internal exams when you start the weekly visits, all are different, but most start around 36 weeks or so. It's really quick and doesn't hurt, but I think it's a little uncomfortable, not bad though.

They usually know because a dr has checked them out. Yes Chris is right usually at 36 weeks you go in every week and they start to check you. They will start to check you earlier if you are having problems. On baby #3 for me I went into preterm labor at 26 weeks and was 3cm dilated and 65% effaced. I stayed on bedrest with shots and pills ect and he was born at 32 weeks.
