I am planning on getting one after this baby is born... I need to do a little more research on them though I think. We might just use natural family planning. I don't want to rely on a pill/patch/injection and we both hate condoms.

I have one and love it. I got it ina few days after my 6 week check up, they don't usually do it that day because your insurance has to approve it and other reasons. It wasn't too painful getting it in. They put in the speculum, slather on some iodine, then the most painful part is you have to cough and then they clip back your cervix so that it stays open during insertion, they then insert it through your cervix to your uterus, they unclip your cervix and try to stop the bleeding, yes you bleed a little, once the bleeding stops they cut the wries to about 3 cm, they are real fine to begin with and once they have been inside you they become thread like, if you partner claims to feel them or if you do go back to your doc and they will trim them some more, then they remove the speculum and DONE! You will have light cramping for 24-48 hrs. I took a motron before I went to help with the pain. I only cramped for a couple of hours and then nothing. A month later I went back for them to check the placement. And I've only had one period since I got it in, it lasted about 2 1/2 weeks though, which is because the Mirena strips the uterine walls. After that nothing! No period since. I love it! Not everyone gets no periods, some people get very light periods, some people get heavier periods. On the Merina, which is 5 years of birth control, there is a constant stream of hormones in your body.

Any other questions feel free to ask!

well, i went to my appiontment today....first off, that sucked lol papsmears are horrible lol second, my doctor doesn't do IUDs so they have to refer me to someone else that does....so they are supposed to call me later and let me know if they found someone who will do it.

lol it really wasn't painful, but i did want to be truthful about what they do when they insert it. i didn't want to sugar coat it. to me it barely hut, it was just uncomfortable. and totally worth it lol

The IUD scares me, lol.

I'm kinda like Randi my bf and I don't llike using condems. We tried it when he came home and lets just say the job wasn't finished(he would so kill me if he knew i said that LMAO)

My whole thing with the patch, pills, and other stuff is that how "normal" is it to stop your period? Where does that blood go?

Our bodies were made to go through the cycle however inconveniaent(sp) and painful it maybe. I don't know....

lol the iud shouldn't scare you, what about it scares you?

lol, ok Niki bare with me.

I've heard thay the IUD releases hormones to trick your body into thinking it pregnant. Therefore, if you're already pregnant, you can't get preggo again.

Also i've heard about blood clots.

And i never really understood the reason on stopping your period completely, is that safe?

lol megan

it does not "trick" your body into thinking its pregnant

This is how it works (i got the info from mirena.com)
Mirena is a tiny T-shaped piece of plastic that is placed into the uterus by your healthcare professional. Once Mirena is in place, it begins to slowly release small amounts of the hormone levonorgestrel into your uterus. It does not contain estrogen, so you can be free of estrogen-related side effects.

While there is no single explanation for how Mirena works, it may:

Block sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg
Make the lining of your uterus thin (this may also result in benefits like less menstrual bleeding over time)
Stop the release of your egg from your ovary (but this is not the way it works in most cases)
It is believed that all 3 of these actions may work together to prevent pregnancy.
It is thought that the small amounts of levonorgestrel that are released by Mirena make your cervical mucus thick and tacky. This is why sperms are immobilized and can't enter the uterus. And the thinning of the uterus is why you may have less menstrual bleeding over time. In fact, about 20% of women will have no period after one year, a safe (and, for most women, preferred) condition.
