The doctor told me that I will be induced using a gel. Can anyone tell me about their experience with this? How effective is it and does it take a long time?

i was induced with pitocin and after 29 hours of labor i finally started pushing. i dont know how well the gel works, you can google induction by gel and should get some ideas.

the gel just hurts.... i have yet to hear success stories from using it. They say it's supposed to get things moving, but everyone i know who had it just made the vagina have sharp pains and ended up needing pitosin.

well i had a similar experience as coartney. i was induced at 41 weeks w/ gel, ended up needing pitocin too and had a 24 hour labor. if i could do it over, i'd wait a little longer before letting them induce me because the labor was so hard -- i had no epi and only one shot of nubain (sp?) so i know what hard labor w/ pitocin and gel is like so next time i hope to go on my own. i don't know anyone who was induced w/ gel OR pitocin (or either) that was happy w/ the experience. sorry to give such a bad review. good luck though.

I thought the gel was just supposed to ripen the cervix. I didn't know that it was supposed to start contractions. Everyone I've ever heard of that got it also had pitocin once the gel dilated them to 4 cm.

my sister had the gel at 40 weeks, they told her it would get things moving (ie her cervix) and should go on her own. a week and a half later, after the terrible vaginal/cervical pains she was getting from it, she did go into labor on her own. that was 10 days after the gel. So it doesn't work on it's own in my opinion. Others i know who got it had the same prob. Didn't say it made contractions come, just that it's supposed to get things moving, and they don't always give pitocin with it. They wnat you to go on your own.

Wow. This is my 4th pregnancy (my first 3 came a week early and on there own). This is making me nervous now. I've only gone through one labour naturally, the other two had epidurals. If they're going to start me on pitocin, I'll just ask for an epi right alongside it. Thanks everyone for the big eye opener about the gel.

I had the gel and it did nothing but make me super crampy. Then I got the pitocin and it did nothing but make me want to die of pain. I ended up with a c section and was happy to have it. I guess it's like any home induction method... none of them work if your body and the baby are not ready.

i had the gel and they told me it wouldn't give me contractions or anything. it was just to 'prep' things for the next morning when they were going to start the pitocin. but i ended being in labor anyways and it helped me dialate pretty quickly 10 cm in 10 hours :]]
