I only have a minute, but wanted to post that I had my little boy. Kyle Marcus was born Tuesday 5-13-08 at 7:41am. He weighed 8 lbs 11 oz and is 21 inches long. We are trying hard at breastfeeding, but since my milk hasn't come in fully he's lost a little weight so I was advised today to supplement after his feedings until my milk comes in. I will post more later when I get a chance.

Congratulations!
Welcome to the world Kyle!!

AHHHHHHH!! ***MISINFORMATION ALERT*****

Whatever medical professional gave you that info is COMPLETELY WRONG!!!! Do NOT supplement 'until your milk comes in', continue to breastfeed baby on demand. Right now baby's stomach is the size of a marble and only requires very little and you have all that amazing colustrum until your 'real' milk comes in that you definitely do not want to miss out on. By supplementing you may be creating a lot of problems, 1st nipple confusion, 2nd your milk will only come in if you breastfeed, etc. etc. etc. Do not forget breastfeeding works as a DEMAND = SUPPLY. You must demand the milk for it to be supplied. It is also COMPLETELY NORMAL AND TO BE EXPECTED that baby losses weight in that first week of life. DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS 'MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL'! Ditch the formula and feed that baby some of your perfect, made especially for him, golden juice.
Sorry for the tangent but misinformation from 'medical professionals' is one of the top reasons for breastfeeding failures. They are required absolutely NO training when it comes to breastfeeding and often give out totally wrong and damaging information (as this person has done). Please do not take this as a bash towards you but complete anger at someone who should not be giving out ANY information about breastfeeding.
Good Luck and please contact me anytime!!

I got so cross eyed with the misinformation I forgot to ask .... Did you get to see a lactation consultant? Specifically to check your latch?

I was TOLD to supplement too, even though my milk supply was fine, and it ruined my breastfeeding.

Thanks for all the congrats girls. :-)

I was hesitant to supplement with formula, but because of the problems I had with my first born and breastfeeding I went ahead and went for it. I met with a lactation consultant several times while in the hospital and she is actually the one who gave me the formula and told me if he didn't start gaining weight to supplement which is what we've been doing since Friday. He went to the doctor today and has gained weight which is good, they had to clip his tongue (the skin under the tongue was too close to the front of his tongue and pulled it down). I am hoping that he starts to latch a little better now that he's had that done, we will find out shortly. I have also been pumping, waiting for my electric pump to come, I think it will be better than the manual, but it works for now. As of yesterday afternoon I was able to pump 1 ounce from one side and about 3/4 and ounce from the other, I was told that was a good amount to get when your milk for comes in so hopefully that means I will have a good supply this time. I'm trying is all I can say!

Here's my question, he prefers to nurse on one side over the other, he will nurse from both, but does much better and doesn't fight latching on when he's on my left breast (which I should add is larger than my right), but when he's on the left breast he starts off with a good latch and then will get down to just the nipple and when I unlatch him or he stops my nipple looks like it's been pinches and it of course hurts when he does this. He does it every now and then on my right side, but not like he does on the left side, what can I do to correct this and get him on with a proper latch?

Thank you for any advice!

Joey prefered my left to my right. Subsequently my left got a hell of a lot bigger than my right. And it took AGES after I stopped breastfeeding to correct again. lol. I think it's normal. No idea how to correct it, I'm afraid, apart from perservering. I expressed with the right and kept trying but it didn't work out for me.

Sounds like you are doing great. Try and start taking away the formula little by little, there really is no need. Regaurding the lopsided boobs, it can be very normal. Try and have baby latch on to the smaller side first and when the latch starts to get lazy make sure to remove your breast and re attach. Unfortunately with a lazy latch persistence is the key, never allow the latch to slip and when it does reattach and go again.
Here is an article on lopsided breasts that may help. Basically make sure to pump and feed extra on the small side.
