Just curious as to which old wive's tales everybody has heard and/or tried for starting labor. I've been reading about them online and while some seem pretty crazy, others I might actually be willing to try. So what have ya'll heard about and did anything actually work for you?

Sex, lots of sex. If you can handle it. I think walking and cleaning. I think anything active would work, but the questions is do you have any engery?Probably not.
Good luck and keep us posted. I guess I should go work now.

Bleh... sex... I think I may have to give in and try that one. I've been walking like crazy and it hasn't helped. I find it ironic that the act that puts you in this state could also actually be what gets you out of it.

That is funny! Good Luck.

I've heard people talk about raspberry leaf tea before. Does that actually work? And can you just buy it at the grocery store? I'm not much of a tea drinker, so I don't know what's commonly available at a typical market.

This one is funny... I asked my mom about what she had heard when she was pregnant... she said that I need to stop shaving my legs! Apparently according to Murphy's Law, everything will come when you are least prepared. So if I just stop shaving to be ready for the big day, then it will happen faster. She also suggested unpacking the hospital bags and sending my husband out drinking with his friends. That way we are 100% unprepared!!

well i have heard of raspberry leaf tea, spicy foods, sex, pineapple *fresh* not canned, walking, caster oil, evening prim rose oil and thats about it. so far the walking sex and spicy foods have done nothing for me at all. it sucks.

lol that is too funny but thats true they told my grandmother to go home when she was having my uncle and then she was rushed back to the hospital by ambulence and they told my grandfather that it would be a while before she was ready to have the baby so he went to the bar to shoot pool and missed the whole birth (no cell phones then lol)

mel not just sex, but oragasim. You need to climax because the uterus contracting from orgasim will start labor. I am not sure that it is true, but it makes some sense more then just him banging around in there for nothing :)

Dammit jill!! You mean I can't just lay there and fake it until it's all over?!? That's no good. :D

no girl you better bust out the vibe LOL You jsut can't fake it til you make it anymore else it's just a waste of your time.

actually sorry if this is TMI the reason behind the whole sex thing is sperm actually softens the cervix to make it favorable to dilate at a quicker rate. so as long as you let him get off in you it will help but also getting off yourself does cause uterine contractions but not enough to bring on labor. Just what my doctor explained to the hubby. he was like oh finally something i can do lol. men!@

Yes, Blake will be excited to hear that we need to have sex to help me along.

Christen - how did your doctor's appointment go yesterday? Any good news?

oh girl i was so disappointed. I was dilated to a 3cm and still 75% effaced which they told me was favorable for induction they then told me that i needed to at 5 am call labor and delievery and if they weren't full then i had to be there by 6 am to be induced. they told me that there was no one scheduled to come in so it was a great chance i would be induced. NO such luck i called and they were like yep were full. i started crying as soon as i hung up the phone i was so ready to do the damn thing today. it just makes me mad because for over 3500 people they only have 4 birthing beds. and i can't get an appointment scheduled because i'm considered an elective induction and theres no medical risk if i don't have the induction. so my doctor called me back the one that i like and was like well i can put your name down for tomorrow but theres a doc you have never seen in delivery i was like ahh and she was like on thursday i'll be in delievery so i want you to come in then if thats ok but you still have to call first just in case. i was like thinking to myself i know that its elective and you can't turn anyone away but i don't even want to get excited because this morning was just such an awful let down.

I think that is why they are called "old wives tales" because no one can seem to keep them straight even the doctors LOL. I think that when it is time it is no matter what we do to help :)

my hubby was ecstatic when they told him that oh yeah she said nipple stimulation as well for about 30 secs at a time. i was like damn where does the fun come in for me because sex is uncomfortable and my nipples hurt.

oh that stinks so much. what the hell do they do for women who go into labor "oh sorry mam we are full today you have to try back later" hopefully by thursday it will be better for you

I used to work in Post Partum, and everyone had a different story of what worked to go into labor.
But in the end it is just up to the body. I know it sucks,I think trying to keep busy with all the old wives tales will work till it;s time, so they all will work.

Aww christen, I'm so sorry. Hopefully you'll be able to get in Thursday though. That would be very exciting. I was thinking about you last night and hoping that you got some good news. Keep us updated though. And you never know, maybe you'll actually go into labor before Thursday and then they can't turn you away!

Yeah, in all reality, I understand that it is completely up to my baby and my body to decide when the time is right for him to be the healthiest, but I figured why not try the noncontroversial stuff out for now. Like the walking. Even if it doesn't work, at least I got exercise out of it. And the tea. Even if it doesn't work, at least I got to drink some tea. And the sex... well... it makes Blake happy so I guess there is a pro to that one too.

yeah i'm military so they told me that if i was to go into labor i have to call the labor and delivery on base and get approval to go offbase. then they will call me back. i was like what if the heads crowning and i dont' have time to call for approval they said then i would have to pay for it myself which i can't afford.

That's a pretty crappy system.

I am 34 weeks and i have ben drinking raspberry leaf tea since i was about 16 weeks. It is sopposed to help tone your uterus and make labour shorter and the contractions more effecient. I suggest mixing it with another kind of tea or honey...it tastes pretty gross!
