I was packing up some things for my little girl at the hospital (yes, to those of you who read my nesting post, I am also obsessing over her hospital bag) and I realized I wasnt sure if a newborn should wear pants. I thought maybe it would aggrivate the umbilical cord. The temp. here should be around mid 70's and up at the time she's born, so will she even need pants or will a good blanket do the trick. I ended up putting about 3 onsies and 2 gowns in the bag (I plan on using my clothes not the hospital ones). But I am not sure about whether I should put pants on her. Any help would be appreciated :)

Hmm ok. I guess i'll throw in some pants too lol. Well its about time for bed here its 2am. If anyone else has any input, do tell me. I am not sure if I packed too much or not enough. Never done this before so I dont really know how many sets of clothes she'll use while we're in the hospital.

of course, thats what this website is for. You dont have to figure it out by yourself - just have everyone else tell you how to do it lol. I have heard a lot of stories about newborns having reactions b/c of soap or whatever the hospital uses. Thats what made me want to use my own clothes. Anyway... thanks and goodnight

i put my newborn in pants, the nappy seemed to protect the umbilical cord anyway, and u can pull the singlet down over it and tuck the singlet into the pants so its not directly over the umbilical cord

I have a couple different outfits packed to choose for going home outfits, and a few onesies. A lot of times baby pants fit kind of low rise, so they shouldn't bother the cord.

Well in my baby classes they kept stressing that you should not put the baby in onsies or one piece outfits until their cord falls off. So they said to use baby t-shirts (which still cover up the belly button, so I'm confused) So I packed baby t-shirts and pants and I plan on rolling the pants down so they are under the stump and hope the t-shirts work.

i was always afraid to put denim on christian until he got a few months old b/c its so hard. i like the "layette" pants. they are really soft. just put it below her belly button and fold her pamper over unless you get the kind that already have the cut-out for the umbilical cord. but mostly footless gowns and footed sleepers will be all you need b/c they sleep 98% of the time you're there. just be sure to pack the really CUTE photo outfit/take-home outfit.

christian wore a pastel blue and white Christian Dior all in one outfit with collar. he had crochet white booties on that were really soft and a navy velvet bunting suit and bonnet/hat (born in dec.) but, alot of extra complete outfits you will find is a waste. you will put them on her and she will just lay there and sleep or she'll be in the nursery half the time getting medical stuff done to her (just checkup stuff).

oh and yes, the umbilical cord will have cotton/gauze on it and then taped over. so, she won't feel a thing, just in case you're worried.

Outties are generally caused by an umbilical hernia. They go away on their own usually. Most babies have an innie. I had an awesome belly button (if I may say so myself) before I got pg. I was so pissed lol. Kaden has an innie YAY

I couldn't even FIND pants to fit Joshua until he was 8 1/2 pounds... so if you delivery a 6 1/2 -7 pounder then they might not fit anyhow. Sleepers don't need to fit as well to stay on. When I did try to put pants on Josh before last weekend they came up to his armpits, lol, like old man pants. Just my oppinion, but I wouldn't mess with pants until later. Oh, and I even tried Preemie pants - and they didn't fit right either (too small around the waist, to short around the ankles even at 5 pounds).

And having a sleeper or pants on over the cord (which my hospital does not cover with gauze or tape) didn't hurt Josh a bit. It was just like a scab for 10 days and then fell off. No bigger a deal than a cut.

for an outtie belly button you can tape a fifty cent piece over it and it will go in.My aunt did this with my cousin and it worked well.
