Anyone out there smoked through there pregnancy and had everything be alright or just the opposite?? How many a day etc? I have been having trouble with this one. I know I am going to recieve a rash of nasty messages but I really want to know who has and the effects that it has had. I hear all different stories about it not being that bad to it being terrible. About docs saying not to quit cold turkey, and some say do, and some say just cut back. Looking for more info I guess.

I'm going through the same thing. I;ve cut my smoking in half to like 5 cigs a day, but I still I know that it's horrible! This is my 1st kid (albeit I don't really want it) but that's no excuse. I have to quit before my family comes into town b/c they would kill me if they saw me smoking. I mean there's no way to know how cigs will effect your pregnancy in particular. You just have to think, "Is that a risk I'm willing to take?" I don't know what my answer is going to be, but I hope you do what's right for you and your baby.

I smoked all threw my pregnancy with my daughter. She was a health 5 pounds 11 ounces and had no problems at all after birth. As for the quitting cold turkey it is not the best thing to do. Think about it.. whatever goes into your body goes to your baby. What do you think the baby is going threw when you are going crazy for a cigarette? Obviously if you feel it is the time to do it and don't want to worry about this question then stop the best way you feel fit. Good Luck

quit smoking, just because you want a cigarette, does that mean your baby should be forced to have one also,
do you think it is fair for that child, yeah yeah all these moms who smoked all through their pregnacies and baby came out healthy bla bla bla, but seriously when one smokes, how long after before they actully get side affects from it or lung and throat cancers,
i know so many moms who smoked through their pregnacies and most of their babies ended up having bad bronchitis later on around 5ish, or asthma, or bad kidneys and liver problem and i guarantee its caused rrom selfish moms who smoke through their pregnacies,
if you cant quit or think you wont be able to, then dont get pregnate untill you have quit, atleast untill you give birth to the poor little innocent person whom you are giving life too, he/she atleast deserves a good healthy start doesnt it?

Alexa where did you get all your medical expertise that you can say you KNOW these conditions were caused from the mother smoking? You dont know jack. Unless you have your scientific proof that all this was from mom smoking then shut up.

I was smoking a pack a day for 7 years before i got pregnant and even after, cause my bf was keeping me stressed out, but I got lucky: when I was 3 months pregnant, cigarettes started making me really sick, so I jsut quit it in 3 days, it was hard, but i made it, and now i dont even think about. How far along are you?

I agree with Candy. You can't prove anything. My grandmother smoked for almost 60 years, had 7 children and all her kids were fine. Not to mention she died at 80 of old age. Didn't have a lick of cancer in her body at the time of death. As for you calling smoking mothers selfish you have some nerve. Do you think that every mother does everything healthy? As for waiting until you quit smoking to get pregnant are you kidding me? I guess you live in a world where you think everything is done by the book and nobody gets pregnant out of the blue? Do you actually read these forums? Opinions are always welcome but with an attitude like that we don't need or want anything from you. Oh not to mention what kinda life style do you lead to know all these women who smoked and had such bad things happen? Watch it ladies, she will probably come back and say she is a nurse or some crap like that...

Jamie I havn't smoked through my pregnancy I auctually quit like 3 months before or so. But I do have a friend that did through the whole pregnancy she tried to stop and then she would get stressed. Well the baby was due on August 27th 2005 and she was born on July 19th 2005 two days after her baby shower she had to be flown to Albuquerque for an emergency c-section, due to the complications! Like I said the baby was born more than a few weeks early and the babies lungs weren't producing the liquid that makes her breathe correctly, that baby had to stay in the hossy in Albuquerque until her due date and then her mom had to tote around an oxygen tank everywhere with her for the next 4 months. She really regrets smoking during her pregnancy. Her daughter is now almost a year old and she looks like she is only a few months old she is so tiny. Smoking can result in low birth weight and pre-term labor. Now I knwo that is not something that I would want to go through. But then there are those girls like my cousin that smoked through the whole pregnancy and her baby is fine. So GOOD LUCK!

Yah smoking can cause preterm labor, supposedly, but I also know women who have had their babies a month or so early and they didnt smoke or drink or do drugs, so whos to say? There are so many other things that can cause problems but women who dont smoke are so quick to blame it on the mothers who do choose to smoke.

Candy you are exactly right and like I said, there are those women that smoke all through their pregnancies and the baby is big and healthy and everything is great. So there is nothing to state that pre-term labor is due to smoking. I just won't do it. Good luck to you all and I hope that if you are trying to quit that you have the best of luck!

I am also looking for an amount. Some woman continue to smoke a pack a day. I would say I might have 3 a day average but most of the time 2 or non at all. There may be 4 days in a row I don't smoke and then have one again. In addition I know woman who have consumed alot of caffine during pregnancy and had low birthrate.

Alexa you are full of it. Everyone has a family member that is somewhere in the medical field that just know EVERYTHING. Funny thing is Doctors can't really tell you for sure cause of pre-term labor or weather smoking has more of an effect then anything else but midwifes sure do know everything. All these other ladies are right also.. Women who do not smoke have pre-term labor as well and have babies that have problems. So until you have your PH-d and have some sort of solid proof that the whole world flocks to then you my dead can "shut up"

My sister in law smoked all through her pregnancy and smokes around her kids now. Her kids are constantly sick and have had numerous ear infections. I've taken SEVERAL classes on early childhood development and every one of them touched on smoking during pregnancy. Basically when you take a drag the baby can't breath. It's associated with low birth weight (I wouldn't really call 5lbs 11 oz that healthy Jackie). Here's a question.... If you were in a restraunt and a person walked up to your baby and blew smoke directly into his/her face what would you do? My husbands mom smoked during pregnancy and in the house while he was growing up. And though several of you pregnant smokers advocates are going to tell me I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.... My husband has suffered the health effects of it for the last 33 years. It's not all about you anymore, you have a baby that can't even get away from you while you have that cigerette that you would just die without. If you smoke enough it CAN cause a still birth. Are you willing to take the risk of a sick baby? People who smoke, drink or do drugs during pregnancy make me sick and in my opinion it's child abuse.

My son was 5 pounds 8 ounces and he came home with me on time and I didn't smoke during my pregnancy. Every woman if differents and things affect women differently. My son had had ear infections like no other but I don't smoke? I was watching TLC and 1 woman did crack threw the whole pregnancy baby came out and had no symptoms of withdraw but another woman did meth until her 2nd month and baby was sick. NONE of you are Doctors and NONE of you have solid proof of anything. There is NO proof that smoking is the cause of any of these childrens problems. You see healthy women having sick babies all the time. They go into pre-mature labor just like other people do. Why is this? I have no idea cause there is NO KNOWN REASON WHY WOMEN GOING INTO PRE-MATURE LABOR! If you would like to aruge about that I would be more than happy to give you the addresses of a million websites that say the same thing. Yes, I know I know... It says "Causes of pre-mature labor" That is not "You smoke, your baby is screwed, you're a babd parent" That is a "Possable cause" nobody truly knows! I would be willing to bet that most of you still believe you can get a cold from going outside with wet hair! Grow up and open your mind. Use this little box in front of you to do some research and show yourselfs that all the things you are saying have NO SOLID PROOF.

Thank you Jill, I know it isn't necessarily right but I agree with you. Quitting is hard, is the one fact I find to be true and shared by most.

I'M 7 MONTHS, IN JAN. I FOUND OUT THAT I HAD PLACENTA PREVIA. THIS IS WHEN THE PLACENTA COMPLETLY COVERS THE CERVIX. THEY SAY THAT THIS CAN CAUSE SEVER BLEEDING= DURING THE DELIVERY IF THE PLACENTA DOESN'T MOVE & IT CALL'S FOR A C-SECTION.tHEY SAY THAT MANY THING'S CAN CAUSE THIS CONDITION, SMOKING IS ONE OF THEM AND THE ONLY ONE THAT APPLIED TO ME. I DIDN'T SMOKE A PACK DAILY OR EVEN EVERY DAY. JUST 3-4 EVERY FEW DAYS OR SO. IT WAS HARD , FOR ME TO QUIT BECAUSE IT WAS MY ONLY VICE OR OUTLET. WHAT HELPED TO QUIT WAS THE FACT THAT I REALLY WANT TO HAVE A VAGINAL DELIVERY. THANKFULLY MY PLACENTA MOVED IN MARCH. MY FEELINGS ARE , I AM IN NO POSITION TO JUDGE YOU, HOWEVER IF YOU THOUGHT THAT SMOKING WOULDN'T HARM THE BABY, THEN YOU WOULDN'T BE ASKING THIS QUESTION .BEST WISHES AND HAVE A SAFE AND HEALTHY DELIVERY
