Hi, I had my first ultrasound at 20 weeks and my baby's legs were spread wide and we saw nothing in between them! It was just dark. My doctor says he's 90 % sure its a girl, but I know at least 3 people who he told it was a girl and it turned out to be a boy! Does this sound familar to anyone?

THey told me my baby was a girl......the u/s tech said 90% girl, so thats what we planned for. At about 7 months in my pregnancy I kept telling my husband I didnt feel right about it, so we got another ultrasound and yup.....there was a penis!! I had a beautiful baby boy. If you are worried and really want to know the sex and get a 100%, I would go do a 3d ultrasound. They are expensive but worth it. If you dont want to do that, I would just assume you are having a girl....but maybe bring a blue outfit to the hospital also!

Thanks so much Kristin! I scheduled another one this week in Atlanta (I live in a small town) just to make sure. The ultrasound tech suggested another 2D scan for reliability purposes. I agree with you and would think 3D would be better, but we'll see. I wish you the best!

Lucky ladies. I live in Manitoba, Canada and you only get ONE ultrasound unless there are suspected complications with the baby. And since we've been deemed healthy so far...guess I'll just have to have faith in the U/S tech. who told us she would bet it's a girl. lol

Angela- to make you feel a little better, with my first pregnancy I only got one ultrasound too. I had to pay $75 to have the second one beacuse there wasnt really a need for it.....but it was kinda worth it, or else my boy would have had a pink and purple room, and have to wear a lot of dresses! There is actually a place in my local shopping mall that does 3d ultrasounds....they cost a lot of money too. Like over 200 dollars.

Kristin-
With your first ultrasound when they told you it was a girl, what did they see? Was there nothing between the legs like mine or they just assumed??

With my son you could see that he was a boy at 20 weeks. It was so cool, of course I still was cautious just in case the cord was in the way or something like that. I had to have an ultrasound each week for 36 weeks on becuase my baby kept turning to breech and back, at the 36 week check when they realized he had turned and did an ultrasound to confirm, it was the first thing we saw when they turned on the machine. No doubt about it. It's still wise to be cautious like you are. Up untill that point I still thought there was a chance they could be wrong, after that, I never even brought a girl outfit to the hospital.

Rachel......the u/s tech said she saw nothing inbetween the legs. So she assumed it was a girl I think. I think they should only tell you girl if the actually see a little vagina down there !

I think your doctor is right especially since he saw NOTHING in between. If there were balls/male parts present then you all would have seen them. Seeing nothing is a good sign that the baby is actually a girl.

I prayed for a daughter prior to conception, and I thank God everyday that my desire is finally here.

When do they usually do the first ultrasound?

did he happen to see three lines or three dots? if he did or if you look on your ultrasound, then it is a girl. i have 3 girls and 1 boy, and on my girls ultrasound picture there are 3 dots, and my doctor said that it is a girl if there are 3 lines or dots.

Rachel, I just had my 18 week ultrasound and just like you the u/s tech saw nothing between the legs, so she said it's a girl. Then, she immediately said the results is not 100%. So in short, I agree with Kristin, the tech should not tell you the gender unless they can really show you the female part.

Bonnie,
If you are dying to know like I was, wait until you are around 22 weeks and get an "elective" ultrasound. Mine was $99 at one of those places that do the 3D ones. I got another 2D b/c I was told it is more reliable as far as determining gender. I know its frustrating! Your intuition is probably right, so you most likely already know what you're having, I did!

my mom had my sister at 40 and everything turned out just fine. as long as you take care of yourself during your pregnacy you shouldn't have any problems. i do know that you get more tests done when you are older, so if you don't like needles than watch out!!

Hi,

My husband and I just found out we are having a girl.......the technician said she was pretty sure it was a girl but will recheck for me again in 4 weeks. Now, I did not see the three lines but in between her legs was a white line running horizontal. Could maybe the three lines just be blending together? We could se nothing in between her legs though....The technician said she would recheck me again in 4 weeks when they attempt to get the full picture of the babies spinal cord. Well, we were so excited (and we know sonograms are not 100%) and bought tons of girl clothes. What do you think? What does the horizontal line mean that runs from inner thigh to inner thigh?

a doctor once told me this:
If they say it's a boy, there is a chance it could be a girl.
If they say if's a girl, then it's a girl.
i'm not sure how accurate this is, but when i was pregnant with my daughter 5 years ago, i was told that it was a boy at around 20 weeks. i had to have an ultrasound at around 35 weeks, and much to my surprise, it was a girl! well, i cried my eyes out because i felt as if my son, who we had named Josiah, had died. it didn't take me long to get over it though. with this pregnancy, (i'm 32 weeks) i had an u/s at 22 wks, 24wks, and 25 wks. with all three, they couldn't tell me for sure because the legs were crossed. i followed the advice of a friend who told me to drink orange juice, and at my 26 wk u/s (they thought my baby's heartbeat was skipping AND my baby has dilated kidney's.....heartbeat is PERFECT now and kideys....still don't know), the u/s tech was finally able to tell me it was a girl! yeah! i go 2x's a week for a NST, and everytime i go, they do an u/s, so after 11 ultrasounds, they are 100% sure it's a girl. i have another scheduled for May 18th, and you better believe i'll ask again! the coolest thing to me was i wanted a girl the minute i knew i was pregnant. EVERYONE, (family, friends, strangers), told me it was a boy. but i always had an idea that it was a girl! YEAH! i didn't mean for this to get so long, but like everyone else said, if they can do a 2d u/s or 3d u/s (because mine are all 2-d now), you can buy pink or blue.......
