According to the article below (found on AOL) too many "unnecessary" ultrasounds can be bad for the fetus.

Doctors warn against ultrasounds

Doctors are warning pregnant women against unnecessary ultrasounds.

In the wake of the casual announcement by Tom Cruise that he'd purchased one, and the prevalence in the US of franchise fetal photo labs, doctors fear that ultrasound equipment is being regarded as a camera and not as a medical instrument.

Doctors and the Canadian Medical association are warning against extra ultrasound sessions, citing studies that have concluded that ultrasounds can contribute to delayed speech, cellular damage, and lower birth weight. The scary thing is that doctors "don't know" the full impact of too-many ultrasounds on the human fetus, and their prescribing precaution.

This is common sense to me, although I will admit that I was kind of excited when I had to have a second ultrasound because of my obstetrician's concern that I was measuring a little small. It is pretty amazing to see a little life kicking inside your womb, it makes the baby so much more real. I knew not to go demanding ultrasounds every second week, but I also didn't think that they could cause cellular damage.

Perhaps Tom's purchase of his home ultrasound machine was a little glib.

I'm no expert, but I read somewhere that multiple ultrasounds have not been proven to cause any harm. It's actually the length or endurance of the ultrasound that can have ill effects. Whatever article I read said something about the energy from the ultrasound raising body temp, and that's when it becomes a problem. They don't have much evidence either way, so I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

just ask tom cruise, he seems to be an expert in everything. ultrasounds, obestrics, post partum depression, and the history of psychiatry! according to him they are fine, you can do them every day. hell, he can even perform them for you! so go on ahead, if tom says its okay, its okay!!!!

I as well have had many scans to keep track of a growing cyst. They made a big fuss about Tom Cruise having the US machine because he was not trained on how to properly use it. It can cause harm if you don't know what you are doing.

I had 16 u/s with #1 and she is ok.. almost 8 in a few weeks, although mouthy as he** and an attitude like a pre teen already!! haha but seriously I didn't think too many u/s were bad, some ppl really need to have an eye kept in there for alot of different reasons, I would hope their OB wouldnt risk the babies lives.
