Don't be so harsh on her, ladies! Ginger, how old are you? This is a legitimate question that some very well versed young people might not know. Are you currently sexually active, because if you are, your hymen is sort of a thing of the past...

Hi, Ginger...

To answer your question, your hymen is a 'thin' piece of skin covering a certain part of your vaginal opening... Many people think that if your hymen is not intact, that you are not a virgin, which is not true at all. Some girls are born with a hymen that covers most of the vaginal opening and a few are even born with a complete hymen, that inhibits them from having a normal period, which then has to be removed by a doctor, but that is fairly rare. The reason you hear that sex is painful if it's not stretched, broken or torn, is because it essentially does cover your vagina, so it is usually sore for the first time or so that have sex. If it continues to cause painful intercourse, then you are supposed to see a doctor because it is probably too thick and will need to be cut. If you are sexually active and it's not painful, then I wouldn't worry about your hymen at all! It's just an annoying piece of skin that you can be happy you don't have to deal with!! LOL

I was 24 years old when I finally learned what a hymen was.....I wasn't too young for sex...I was raised in a very religious and close-minded town where sex wasn't discussed. People should really stop with harsh comments.

I wasnt being harsh But sex ed teaches you that stuff and I was simply saying if ya dont know maybe your to young to have sex. And really I am sorry for those who really didnt know I wont comment about that but I am just tired of reading bogus stories on here. I come here to enjoy my pregnancy and ask real questions not read about 9-13 yr olds having sex with their dad or brother or cats ect. Or read about brains falling out. And the abortion topic is way to sensitive to discuss on a pregnancy forum you need a debate forum for that. Maybe I should just back off this site and see if a real one is around. Amy~ I can tell the mature enough teens from the childish ones, I think most of us can.
