well braden is almost 4 weeks old, and for the past week he has had this goop in his eyes, yellowish. his eyes are not red nor are they irritated, he doesnt try to rub his eyes and no one that has been in contact with him has had any sight of pink eye.. my mom suggested i call tomorrow b.c it may well be allergies b.c i have them horribly, and living in florida, most people do. im just wondering if its common in new borns to have this and it not be pink eye. the only thing that would suggest it be pink eye is the goop and nothing else so im wondering if in fact it is just allergies?

Both mine had this and the doctor said it was a blocked tear duct. To take a warm wash cloth and clean it and then several times a day firmly but not too hard rub outwards and it will open that duct up and it will go away. I think it is fairly common in babies.

Blocked tear ducts do look like pink eye. Rub them like I said.. it should help in a bit. Tears do still come out and it happens mostly when they sleep.. yes.. sounds like the same thing. If it gets worse though you may have to try drops.

Oh and babies with blocked tear ducts are way more likely to develop Pink Eye (Conjunctivitious).

Whenever Sophie gets a cold, it always starts with goop in her eye. So you may keep an eye out for a runny nose in the next day or two.

Then I would definitely go see the doctor - that doesn't sound like a cold. Pink eye usually gets crusty too, especially after they have been asleep for awhile. It could also be a scratch on the eye, and the goop is the eyes way of protecting itself.

Squirt some breastmilk in there. I swear it will fix it right away. There is nothing better. That stuff is a miracle cure!

Mamal - lmao!! You are definitely the breastfeeding queen on here! I just got the Breastfeeding Book by Martha Sears over the weekend and I've been trying to read a little bit everyday. I'm learning so much - I don't know how I even managed to BF for 4 months with my first. I didn't have a clue!

I try my best. I also had a horrible time breastfeeding. I managed to make it 14 months but only because I studied my tushie off. That's why I try and be here for others because I know that support is key.

my son had this also. they told me to get a warm washcloth and rub downwards a couple of times. it should unclog his tear duct. it took me like 2 weeks to get it uncloged.

I've actually seen pinkeye cured with breastmilk....my friend got married last summer and the day before the wedding, her flower girl came down with pinkeye...bride's sis is into natural medicine and just got a little bottle of breast milk, and used it as normal eye drops. By the day of the wedding, the flower girl's eyes were bright and clear!
