Has anyone does this and do you think it works? The midwife I saw last week said it increases your chances of NOT tearing ny 30% or more. Which I like but good grief, I tried it and first to get my hands around my fat belly was quite a feat. Anyhow, I just don't know how to know if I'm doing it right or if I'm just shoving thumbs up there for no reason. :) Sorry TMI. If anyone has good tips, I'd love them.

well, my o.b. was excellent, thats why i'm using her again. she did that and was very patient with me. (38 hrs labor) and i was able to push out a 9 pounder boy with no tears or cutting! i highly recommend your ob to do it. some aren't patient and will cut you quicker than you can blink. i guess its something you should put in your birth plan. good luck. i hope they do it for you.

I know it's immature, but ewwwww! For some reason it's just icky to me to be massaging that area or to be having someone else do it. But I guess I won't care when I'm in labor (may not even know it's being done) and I'd rather have that then tear. My midwives are against episiotimy unless nessecary so it's probably something they do.

Danese - here's a good website with info. My midwife basically said for me to massage this area every day for 10 minutes between now and when i give birth and if i can't do it because my fat ole belly is in the way to have my husband do it. uh i don't even want to let alone let him do it. :)

no, i've never done it myself, nor hubby. i didn't even know what it was until i got into that 37th hr of labor and she began to do it. to be honest, i was in so much freaking pain, that i didn't even know what she was doing until i looked up into the mirror that they had already set up. then, i knew what she was doing. i mean, yes, i'm sorry, i DID know what it was, i just didn't know much about it. i just know i did not want to tear or be cut. i was more afraid of that than the epidural. i thought it would be nasty too, but it helped me soooooooooooooooooo much. i don't know what i would've done without her. thank God for Dr. Kara Jefferies!

I'm going to try it again tonight but I hate it and I swear I don't know if I am doing it right or not or just rummaging around in there and doing no good. and it's not comfortable - the midwife i saw said if it's comfortable you aren't doing it right. great. :)

A good friend of mine used a midwife. They had her or her hubby do this with olive oil everyday for at least two weeks before she delivered. She pushed out and 11lb baby (practically a toddler) and didn't tear. She swears by it.
