Hey, I saw your post on the autism board. I check that from time to time because of my job as a therapist. Are you pregnant with another? How old are your autistic boys?

I'm not an expert on this, but I just read an article in my parenting magazine about autism. They can't tell in the womb because the sympotms have to do with how the child relates to the world and the people in it, so it usually isn't diagnosed until the child is old enough to have meaningful interaction - like recognize his mother and father, his name etc.

I don't think so Coartney, I think you actually don't know until the age your baby should start talking. But I could be completly wrong, I'm just guessing from what little I know about it.

Fetal alcohol syndrome? Sometimes they can detect that right away - at birth at least - because of the distinct facial features. Same with down's. I saw an episode of Birth day or one of those shows where the parents gave birth to a down's baby that wasn't diagnosed in the womb. The doctors knew within hours that he had it.

No, most babies don't show signs of autism until they are about 18 months. Actually, a lot of parents will tell you that their children developed normally until that point. Several studies have been done to try and diagnose it earlier, it just hasn't been successful. At about 2 years of age the brain begins to develop and grow very quickly. The autistic brain doesn't do this and at first you see delays and then recession as the child tries to deal with his overwhelming environment. Okay, that was probably much more info than you wanted. Sorry.

What scares me the most is that no one has been able to come up with a concrete answer to what causes autism. Sometimes I wonder if it isn't a chemical found in a common household product and we just haven't made the connection yet.

yeah I agree there was a lot of drinking before I found out I was pregnant and I still worry about it.

The doctors say in the beggining it doesnt affect them to much its when you drink while you are later in your pregnancy. Oh and french woman drink a glass of wine everyday while pregnant. if that will ease your mind a little.

Yes my twins have autisim, I had them diagnosed at 2.5years they go to a early intervention twice a week and music therapy starting next term. I knew at about 3-4 months something was wrong they didn't act like the other babies in my mothers group. They wernt the least bit interested in the playgymor try and reach out and touch it and would not make any eye contact. You can't tell when pregnant if your child is autistic its a lengthy process that has to be done by a group of therepist. I was and am heartbroken by it but still wouldn't change them for the world just have to deal with it get on with life and try and help them the best I can.
I aslo have a 8 month old son and am currently trying for another child.

fetal alcohol comes in two different forms fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or fetal alcohol effects (FAE) both are very common.FAS is often diagnosed while the baby is vey young sometimes right after birth because of the visual facial characteristics such as ears that are lower than normal, flat upper lip, etc.FAS is usually the result of a mother who has drank constantly during her pregnancy.FAE is harder to detect
because none of the facial characteristics are present and the child appears normal, these symptoms usually present themselves later on usually about the time a child begins school, the child with FAE has a very hard time learning cause and effect, etc.FAE is cause d by the mother who has social drinks throughout her pregnancy.I had a little foster boy for 19 months who was diagnosed with FAE and quite a number of things. It is just someting you learn to deal with and work with in ways that work for you.
But good news girls,a few drinks before you knew you were pregnant will probably not have any effects on your baby.It will be ok
