i know i have a lot of time to think about this but i have been wondering what all of you think about this topic and what kind of advice i can get.
i know most doctors recommend that you feed on a schedule, but my sister was always against this and just fed when the baby was hungry. my only problem with this is i plan on breastfeeding. so do i need to feed or pump every 2 hours or so to keep my supply up? i just dont know how you keep your supply going because my sister always had problems with this. please help. i hope my question makes sense...

Baby makes the schedule. I hate when people tell you to schedule your babies feedings. If nursing and falling asleep, they wont eat as much and may be hungry again sooner.

I let my baby set his schedule for feeding and it was perfect for me.

My doctor (well Tyler's doctor) when I was breastfeeding Tyler, said to never wake a baby to feed them, let them set thier own schedule, if you wanted to for fear of not producing enough milk you can always pumo in between the feedings. But I think you should be fine with feeding when the baby is hungry!

It worked for me... cause he slept all night from day one! But with Belle... she's allergic to milk so nothing makes her 100% full.. lol!

hi! i've discouvered with baby- issue- planning- things always seem to just happen...you make plans, worry about issues....and things just end up going with the flow~ ya know~ its hard to have a scheduel, what happens if baby will not nap, then you HAVE to go somewhere(for me always that damn wal-mart).....i dunno things will work out. i havent planned a thing with this pregnancy, every baby is different
does that make sence?

Supply = demand with bf. If you decide to bf there is no need to pump at all unless you plan to go out and leave bub with someone.

Yeah, I always had enough milk. You only make what the baby eats. Ethanael slept through the night at 8 weeks and we still did great with the change.

I was always told by all the nurses that breastfeeding on demand is always best, but if they go more than 4 hours you have to try and feed them. never let them go longer than 3-4 hours without eating....at least try to feed them, and if they don't well they don't!! but they usually will....you body will produce according to what you're baby needs...the more your baby is at your breast the more your babody will recognize this and produce more. so....just feed when your baby want to feed!! :-)

I guess you could say I scedule her feedings.... she takes 4oz about every four hours but that is just a guide to go by. If she isnt hungry then I dont feed her, if she is hungry before then I do feed her. How do you know if she really is hungry well I am still figuring her out!!! Sometimes its hard to tell. Addy like to try and eat my arm... then I know its definitely time to eat!

with my son...there was no schedule...he was the schedule. i just feed him whenever he was hungry. eventually, after a while, he got his own little schedule and we went from there.

I am of the mind that in the earily days esp if you are breast feeding it is best to feed on demand. It establishes you supply. Also as long as the baby is gaining at a healthy rate I think it is best to feed when they are hungry. they will work out a schedual on their own most times. I know some paretns stick a bottle in their babies mouth at each cry, but that is not what I am sugesting, but if you see your baby showing signs of hunger (chryng, rooting, sucking on fingers) then feed it

I agree with everyone, but like bmes said, if the baby has slept for 4 hours without feeding, it's a good idea to wake her up and offer the breast. This is especially important if your baby is like 4 weeks or older and still doesn't have night and day correct, which is very common. Also, babies go through cluster feedings where it seems they feed all day. It can be tempting to skip some of those feedings, but that is when your supply will really get going.

Man invented clocks NOT Nature!

Nature runs on rhythms instead and your baby is the one who sets the pace.

You CANNOT shedule feed a breastfed baby especially!
