I have a tattoo on my lower back and I got the epidural when I had my daughter. They didn't say anything about that to me. ? I have been undecided about getting an epidural this time but I know I am going to chicken out and get one. I am really bad with pain.

i just heard from some one that the ink interfered or something but i hope not cause i'm not a big fan of pain so if it gets too much then i'm going to want an epidural

WRONG
IT HAS NO EFFECT ON WHETHER OR NOT YOU CAN GET AN EPIDURAL

I'm with everyone else... it does not effect an epidural at all. My doctor actually mentioned this to me without me having to even ask. (I have a lower back tattoo).

Tattoos and Spinal/Epidural Anesthesia
by William Reid Camann, MD

Q. If you have a tattoo on your back can you still get a shot for pain in your back during labor?

A. This is a common question, as the popularity of tattoos has been recently increasing. In particular, the lower back seems to be a very common site. The tattoo pigments are inert dyes, which do not result in any bodily reactions once the initial tattoo healing process has been completed. The amount of pigment that is used in the tattoo process is quite miniscule. The needles used for spinal or epidural anesthesia do not carry pieces, or even particles, of skin or tissues into the spinal or epidural spaces. Once the tattoo has healed, the dyes or inks are fixed in the cells within the skin, and cannot be mobilized by a needle. There is no evidence that any harm will come from placing a clean needle through a healed tattoo.

Although some anesthesiologists may be reluctant to perform an epidural directly through a tattoo, most of the time this can be done safely. In many, but not all, cases the anesthesiologist can find an area of non-tattooed skin to insert the needle. It is always best to ask an anesthesiologist at your hospital to discuss this concern.

I actually do not have a tatoo. And I am not sure if it is the same every where but I was numb during a contraction and then he inserted the epidural during a contraction. So even though I felt him numbing the area the contraction was much worse then the needle.

I have one on my hip too,so far it hasn't changed. But I am only 22 weeks.
I wonder if anyone has had problems with tattoos stretching, I would like to know.

nicole,
I bet you will have your little man before me. I just have a feeling. If we have them the same week, that will be something I will always remember.

I have one too and asked my doctor about it. He said it was b/c old tattoos used to contain small amounts of lead.

My hip tattoo has gotten really big! If you look at my 33 week journal pics compared to my 15 week.... luckily I have no stretch marks!
