I have 2 children 4 & 8. My 8 year old son has a wonderful love of learning. He is a voracious reader and has always loved math, until recently. We''ve tried various curricula, but I am beginning to see a resentment toward learning. I've done extensive research on learning styles and various homeschooling methods. I seem to think unschooling may work for my son, but to be completely honest, the conept of student guided learning scares me. I'm also a bit confused with the differences/similarities between Montessori and unschooling. Does anyone have any thougts or suggestions?

Hi Heather, I would suggest you stand back and take a look at your day. Many times parents try to become teachers in the sense that they do what the schools do only they do it at home. Our children need parents to teach them in a natural way, not the way of the institution which is unnatural and unhealthy. So just go with the flow, each child is different and grows and develops in areas at different paces. This is perfect. So maybe he is bored , ask him what he is interested in and enjoy whatever it is together with him. Don't feel the pressure of the world to do what they do, isn't that why you keep him home? Do what you think is best and focus on his strong points and interests. You can weave math into whatever he is learning in fun and enjoyable ways. Who made up all of these standards anyway?

we do a combo of alot of diffrent methods, however i think we do alot of unschooling, if it gets to structred my kids feel like they HAVE to do it... and as i very well know "you cant make me!". we have a chart with all our subject areas on it for each child, the things we have to do every day are at the top of the list. reading, one math drill and journling... everything else we do as it fits into our day, and more times than not it even suprises me how man subjects we can cover playing in the back yard. i keep each flow sheet going for a week at a time so that i can make sure we are getting everything in, even if we dont do it all every day. not compleate unschooling, more like child lead learning with well placed nudges and redirects from us!
