My sister Samantha just turned 16 and for these past three years she has been acting like a hermit..not leaving her room, not socializing, no one ever calls the house for her, I'm sure she has acquaintances but not the friendships that she should be forming at this point in her life. She recently confessed that she was a lesbian and that her hermit like behavior was a result of her stress and her sense of confusion. During the time of her depression and self isolation she refused the suggestion of seeing a therapist because she was not comfortable with face to face interaction...let alone with a stranger..last month I was on myspace minding my own business when a friend requested me...PEERS UNITE..with a picture of a rainbow..that rainbow has saved my sister's life. I clicked out of curiousity and began to read about their cause..visited their website and decided to try it out for her sake..I thought okay..10 dollars for a response from them..cheaper than what I would have paid the doctors...i spend more at Starbucks..i figured it was worth a try for her health. I told Sami to write as much as she wanted about whatever she was going through to [email protected] then replied in a timely manner saying that they had read her email and had a response prepared if she was interested in hearing what they had to say...I asked her if she wanted to recieve their responses and she told me that she did. I paid 10.00 ( I spend more at Starbucks and breakfast!) and within seconds she recieved an email from Peers Unite. It gives teens the opportunity to vent to their peer in a setting that is not pressuring or judging..no case terms are thrown out...since last month I've made Samantha a monthly membership. For all of you mothers or teens who need an outlet..I'd recommend Peers Unite for anyone and everyone.
