pitbulls are very gentile with babies.. they were often called the nannies of america in the 40s and 50s... i would just let them get acquainted slowly.

I am due in November, we have had out pit bull for 4 years, she is a great dog and very protective of us but is very sketchy with new people. I have had my neice around her and she worries me she gets very jealous. I am worried when our baby comes she will act the same way. We do not want to get rid of our dog but we want to know how to adapt our dog to the new baby when he comes, does anyone have any pointers for us?

I am in need of some advice. I have a 7 mo. old baby girl with my ex-husband. I am about to get re-married to another man who loves me and my baby. The only problem is.... he owns a 150 lb pit bull. Gucci is very good with kids that come over and has only been around the baby once and did not try to hurt her but lick her. My ? is does anyone think that moving in with him and his pit bull will make my ex-husband want to take her from me. Would I be putting her in a dangerous position And do you think SRS would take her from me if they knew she was living with a pit bull?

Honestly, you don't need to worry, just be a little bit careful. I have an Amstaff that is about 16 months old and a 6 month old daughter. Mako (the dog) absolutely LOVES the baby and has since the day she was born. The only thing we had to worry about was his size and strength, but when we tell him to get away from her, he does. I have watch her pull on his ears, lips, and tounge, and the dog does not move. You might want to watch out for the dog trying to lick the baby's face, although the child will probably love it. All in all, if your dog is well-trained and you keep an eye on the situation, everything will probably be fine. Best of Luck

i am at such a hard spot right now. i have 2 female pitbulls. they are great together, other than when there is food around. they are EXTREAMLY food aggressive. they even get into fights where it is so hard to get them apart because of the lock jaw, and a lot of damage is done by the time they can get tired and give up. i am 6 months pregnant, i am already planning on getting rid of one of them just because 2 dogs and a baby would be too much anyways for me to try and take care of. its not fair to dogs or baby. but i am scared to keep the one. she is 5 and i have treated her like "my baby" rather than my pet. she eats when and what i eat, and i am scared to death that she might attack my child if food was around. she has never been aggressive around humans whatsoever, but im afraid she might be with a baby. please help. i love this dog to death but would never want to put my child in the position of being killed by her.

I just had my baby, & i'm not saying it's the same in every case but you have to slowly introduce the baby and make sure that you let the dog know that the new baby is part of the family. My pit bull is very protective of mine & my husbands things like our trailer where she sleeps, & 2 garden chairs she takes naps on. She's not aggressive but you can see she's upset if you take those things away. So don't show your dog less attention when the baby comes otherwise she'll know she has been misplaced and might get jealous

I have the same problem. I have a 3 year old pittbull who is great with the family but when a friend came over with her baby, he didn't like it one bit. He barked at the baby the whole time it was there even once we had put him in the back yard. The dog is great with our 5 year old but she was born before we got him. I'm worried because my husband and i are trying to conceive and are worried about how the dog will react to a baby. He's not your normal dog. We got him from a shelter where the previous family was abusive to their daughter and when the police came to get the child, the dog was shocked by a taser 4 different times and beat with flashlights because he wouldn't let him near the kid.

I was really nervous because i have a two and a half year old pit and he's a complete mama's boy he cries the whole time im gone be it three minutes or three hours is attatched like glue to my hip and is very protective. through out my whole pregnancy all i heard about was how he was going to eat my baby. well he didnt infact hes better w/ her than my other two dogs ones a shepard and the others a chow. he is wonderful. im not suggesting to automatically trust your dog but protect your child as if the worst will happen and give the dog a chance. in my opinion. and my ex tried to use my pit against me for custody and they completely disregarded it as angry ex bs. good luck.

I have recently been put in the same situation, only with a 4 yr old male pit and a 4 yr old female pit / sheperd mix We had our daughter last Oct. and have had our dogs walking on eggshells. There in something about having your whole family telling you your dog is going to kill your baby that sheds doubt on your dog. Right? Well, we went back and forth about at least getting rid of our make (the more aggressive one) but then gave him well supervised time to see if that was necessary. Well, it wasn't. He is as in LOVE with her as she is him.
Just be wary. Go with your instincts. It isn't that you have a particular kind of dog that makes you need to be careful, it is ALL dogs. All dogs can get jealous and aggressive. Keep your dog well socialized as well as teach your baby good doggy skills (easier said that done I know!)
As far as the jumping thing goes, knee her in the chest if she EVER jumps on you. Dogs don't understand being able to do things sometimes.
Be safe, Be happy and enjoy your newcomer and help her join your family seamlessly! :)
