All snakes need mice. The small snakes just eat mice called "pinkies" they are basically mice so young that they don't have hair yet. Many snakes will eat frozen mice thawed in warm water if you shake them around a little. If not you are stuck feeding them live mice. If you choose a snake that gets to be quite large, they start eating other animals such as guinea pigs, rats and rabbits. Some snakes also eat eggs. How old is your son? Snakes are not a good pet for young kids, as they are escape artists and can easily get out if the cage is not latched properly and good luck finding them then! Some snakes can also be agressive...not always venomous, but it still hurts so your son needs to be able to handle them. Also they need a fairly large tank.Even a small baby snake needs a MINIMUM of 30 gallons. You also need to provide fresh water everyday, moss for shedding, and in some cases a high heat source. They also need rocks and other stuff to hide in.

Well... how old is your son? I wouldn't recommend a snake for a small child. If you do get him a snake get him a small one at least to start out with. No boas or pythons. Maybe a hognose.

heres a site that tells you ways to build a cage
http://www.reptile-cage-plans.com/
but a fish tank will do just fine as long as the size fits the snake. a good rule of thumb is to have the tank/cage at least twice as long as the snake this giveing the snake room to crawl around and molt. if you use a tank, you should get locks for the lid because snakes are known to dissapear when no one is looking.

It bascially depends on what type of snake you get for him. Some eat mice and some eats rats.

By far the most delicious snake haveever tried is a royal python, but do make sure it is thoroughly cooked. I hope your son also finds it delicious.

Good luck with finding a suitably delicious snake for your son

how old is your son. The snakes are great animals , think no walking 4 x a day no litter box just once a week feeding and no shots.I have 14 snakes all corn snake variations. The pet stores agree the corn snake is the best beginner snake. they get no larger than 5 ft on average and are usually very docile. they get about 2 inches in diameter full grown. They live around 12-15 years from my understanding. It takes at least 4-5 years for them to achieve full growth so don't worry. and Mom learn to enjoy them with him I did with my son and now I actually get into them more then he.

Hi Kaitie, i know a little bit about snakes and i would have to say that i htink it's great that your son loves snakes. Personally if i was going to get him a snake i would consider a spotted python, as they are one of the most people person snakes and they also don't get as big as the other snakes. childrens pythons can get up to 6meters in lenght now that's apretty big snake, however a spotted python at full grown length will only grow to about 1.8 meters in length a lot of difference huh? snakes are usaully kept in a tank with a heater and sometimes a heated brick this you should be able to get from your pet shop, they should have snake enclosures, however i'd have a look at the type you like and then i'd go on ebay as sometimes they have cheaper ones there. depending on where you live the first thing you will need will be a licence. this will cost about $50 bucks and you will also need a book and this will need someone t write in it or stmp it when you buy your snake so authorities (if need be) can look in it and tell what breeder you got your snake off. that's about $2.00 o sometimes free. snakes eat mice, i know but hey it's gotta eat. i suggest you get a baby snake and one that's been handled alot, that way it's used to people handling them. well that's about it for me, but just remember it's your's and your sons choice, but make sure you know what you want and exactly what your getting, before you purchase your snake, well good luck..... chantel:)

i have a problem with my younger male garter snake he just shed today and i saw that there was blood between his belly scales and im not too sure what that means or if i should treat it and im not too sure how

Well, your probably best with a ball python. they don't grow to big only about 5-6 feet but are extremely docile. They're one of my favorites

PS: Don't get a burmese, anaconda, or reticulated python (Just to let you know)
