so the new kitty is bad because we can't stop him from doing bad things like chewing on wires or plants, climbing on us to get at our food and jumping on tables. we have tried squirting him with water, yelling and making loud noises, spanking him and saying NO but none of that has made a difference. what can we do? he just will not learn!

put vinegar where you don't want him to go, you can just put some on a cotton ball. i don't know why cats don't like it, but they will stay away.

Hi moggie.. to let you know, cats don't understand physical punishment like dogs do. Spanking or anything like that won't really make a difference except to make them scardeycats. All I can suggest is sticking it out... my cat took a few months to learn what was right and wrong. She definitely jumped right on the table and tried to eat outta my plate! But just be consistent, especially with the water bottle (squirting) and use a firm NO or clap your hands loudly when you catch him doing something. I read somewhere that in order to learn, they have to actually be caught in the act ... guess that's not too hard for you as he seems to be in trouble a lot. Anyways, I think when a cat is new to the home, the stress of adjusting has a lot to do with bad behavior. Hope it works out for you!
