we have a 4 month old wheaton terrier that is just not getting the concept of going poopy and potty outside. we got him from a puppy mill when he was 8 weeks, which may have something to do with it, but if we don't get him trained soon we will have to give him away. does anyone have any suggestions? please help!

Hi!! Try getting a kennel for him. One that's just big enough for him to sleep in. (They usually will not potty where they have to sleep.) Only let him out of it to eat and go potty. Make sure you stay out with him, and that he does his business. Praise him, and put him back in kennel. Try this for about 2 weeks. You have to stay with it. I would also give my dog a treat when he would be put back in his kennel. Telling him "good boy"! Now he sleeps in his kennel at night! Does not potty in the house either. He's 4! All we have to tell him is go to bed. He knows where to go...right to his kennel.

I will end saying we had problems with potty training our boy too. This way worked for us. Good Luck in any way you try!

Also take his food and water away at around 7pm. They are like kids they wet the bed if given a drink before bed.

We have a 4 month old puppy and are still trying to housebreak her. She is in a kennel, but she WILL go in there. Not all the time, but once in a blue moon. The kennel is not too big for her.
The other day she had eaten and been outside and went to the bathroom, so I thought she has been good for awhile I will give her some play time, I was sitting at tht computer and she pooped right next to me.

get a vrate to keep her in all the time, and take her out first thing in the morning to go to the bathroom and if she pees but not poops after being out side for awhile, then take her back in side and put her back in the crate, and try it again a little while later

momof3, I know it sounds kinda cruel to keep 'em in there all the time. But, for some reason (my opinion) they begin to realize that they will stay in there bed if they potty anywhere but outside. There will be some occasional accidents. Put 'em right back in.
When we first brought Tubby home he was paper trained. Oh Lord! Talk about a nightmare and mess!! I also suggest putting a cuddly stuffed animal in with him/her. Makes them feel safe and secure sometimes.

Well for the most part she is in there, and yes I hate it and feel mean, but That is how whe trained Toby our older dog. I also put her kong in there with her, and that has really cut down on when she is out eating her stealing things and chewing on them. But I had read somewhere that they also need play time, while training. So I try to give her some everyday. When she goes outside the first thing she does is go to the bathroom.. I just get frustrated with her, I love her to death don't get me wrong, but Toby is the most laid back dog I have ever met. He has NEVER even as a puppy jumped on people. He had problems with subbmissive urination but that was his pnly problem.

You potty train by staying on top of them. When they leave a room you follow. If they pop a squat you correct it. Putting them in a crate all the time is like locking your child in a room alone to potty train. They won't get it! Puppies have got to pee every 15-30 min so as a owner you should have the time to take them to yhe potty. It only takes 2-4 weeks to potty train if done the right way.

T-rabbit..I guess I didn't clarify to let them out every 30 min. And stay on it! I didn't leave him locked up like that. I would never do that! But...your absolutely right!

well dont keep her in ther all the time, i jsut mean when your not home or sleeping, it becomes their safe place, and they will go to it to sleep or when they are scared, but you have to take them out all the time to go and when they go in the right place, give her a treat

Okay we let her out every hour to poddy, she is 4 months old, and she can hold it an hour, We don't let her out of our sites, she is in the room with us at all times. When she pees or poops in the house and we see her do it, we say no sternly and get her outside. Some dogs are just harder to to train.
