yes staffordshires are great family dogs!!!! they are very loyal, and protect thier masters, but i hope you wont let that dog near her ever, and NEVER EVER alone with the baby. you can let her play with the dog supervised, but never alone just remember, that the dog doesnt know what a baby is, and doesnt know his smell, and may think of the bay as an intruder, so as i did with my dog, i gave him one of my babys blankets, and let him sleep with it, and get his smell, then i let him see my baby through a small crack in the door[smell my baby, look at my baby] then i let her smell my babys feet, and i still havent let my dog near my baby fully, but these dogs are wonderful and loyal, but dont every leave your baby alone with the dog, or let the dog near the babys face, and these dogs tend to bond with his masters, and are mean to other people,, so be sure to socialize the dog, by taking him to places where people are, and letting people pet him, and dont get any other, dogs, especially small ones, because they dont get along with these kinds of dogs, and they have what is called "lock jaws" where they bite down on the victom and dont let go, and rip it apart, which is why some people buy a jaw opener[steel bar ured to pry open mouth] and which is why im stressing you not to leave the baby near the dog, but dont get me wrong like i said earlier great family pets if you dont plan on getting other dogs, ok hope this info helps =)

hey mandy thanks for the advice. But wernt staffordshire bull terriers known as the nanny dog in their country of origin and used to raise children in orphaniges . I mean mandy your a great girl to write an essay dont get me wrong, but i reccomend you confine your essay writing to topics hou have knowledge about. Thats the girl!!!
=
well, actually the staffordshire bull terriers origin was in the UK, around the seventeenth century. As bull baiting declined in popularity and dog fighting took over, it became necessary to develop a dog which possessed a longer and more punishing head than the Bulldog and also to combine strength and agility. this is what stafforshire bull terriers for used for in thier place of origin. not only that, but your dog that you own, wasnt used as a nanny dog, therefor unsafe to leave alone with a small baby as with any dog would be, and any dog can be unpredictable.
=

You are both right staffys were used for dog fighting but. They were also known for their natural bond with humans and their maternal instincts towards children. They were used in ophaniges in both britain and ireland to comfort and mind babies. These particular breed was chosen for this role as they are tough and well able to take the pulling and tugging of ears that a child might give. as well as having a great bond with humans. My family has had staffys for three generations and they have never once shown agression towards kids but a great bond. I have had a staff sleeping on my bed since i was three years old and now in the place of the first staff is his grandson. I admit they can show agression to other dogs from time to time but never towards humans. Its because of a few bad owners that teach their dogs to be bad that the breed has the reputation it does but if theres one thing im sure of its that if staffys are brought up corectly in a loving home they will give nothing but love back. So dick shine i wouldnt worry about your baby it couldnt be in better hands, [or should i say paws!!!!]
=
Good man arthur its nice to see someone that knows what their talking about. Its because of people like mandy the breed has the bad rep. sounds like she reads too much insted of being educated by experience . and theres loads more just like her. it sickens me!

no no no. im not saying that all pit bulls are mean, i was just sayng thats what they were bred for. i have 2 stafforshires bull terriers! [names are sweety, and princess] they are wonderful dogs, but i was just trying to get my point out that all dogs can be unpredictable, as can all dogs, and not to leave the baby alone. and graham, if i didnt like staffys, why would i own them? i see you musnt have read my other post. well arent we a little quick to judge? i am completely against the breed bans, and i am actually in the fight [ writing letters to government, and getting ppl to sign petitions] agains breed bans. but i still wouldnt ever leave my baby alone with my dogs, thats all i was trying to say.
=
her graham why are you so rude? geez mandy was just saying not to leave your baby alone with a dog, or any dog and i highly agree. we arent in the seventeenth centurey anymore. anyways if u know so much why would you have us waste our time and answer this question?
=
they are the best! we have one the kids love him and he loves them, not a nasty bone is his body. the best natured dog by far. much more personality than those little ankle biters. we used to have a pomeranian years ago now that was a vicious little thing.
=
staff and pitbull are great with children, but with any breed a small child should never be left unattended with any dog
=
yeah your right graham, here in vic aust they have just banned pitbulls. you can no longer register them and breeding is illegal. im mean you can re register ones that have already been registered but no other ones. i think its pretty sad, other breeds "attack" too.

I have a staffordshire she is two years old. I got her when she was four months old because she killed aother dog and the owner decided he did not want her anymore. Her father had to be put down because he turned on his owner and I found out this week that her brother had to be put down for the same reason. My dog sleeps with me every night but now my family is pushing me to put her to sleep. They think she may attack me at some point. I am not sure at this point what to do . But as my brother said once she does attack it's to late. I love my dog but should I take a chance on her hurting someone I dont know if I could stand to put her to sleep or not it would break my heart. How am I going to live with my self if she does attack someone when I know that pit's can and do attack at times
=
why the hell would u wanna put her to sleep if she hasnt done anything?! why would you kill someone innocent? isnt it innocent until proven guilty?! WHY WOULD THEY EVEN SAY ANYTHING LIKE THAT IF SHE DID DO ANYTHING BECAUSE THEY THINK SHE GOING TO "ATTACK" YOU SOMEDAY? i suggest you try finding another home if you resort to such drastic measures
=
NOOOOO DONT PUT HER TO SLEEP! DONT DO IT! INVEST IN SOME TRAINING! GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE! JUST DONT KILL AN INNOCENT DOG! WHY WOULD YOU EVEN THINK BOUT SUCH A THING? WWWWWHHHHHYYYY

I have a pit, and she is a great dog. I also have a golden retriever. Both dogs are excellent with children & adults. The way you treat & train your dog matters. A pit does have a wide, strong jaw, but a dog doesn't just turn and rip apart people and other animals!!! If you train your dog to fight other dogs and torture the dog by mistreating it, then yes, it will be a psycho dog from hell, and your fault. This is my second pit that I had from puppy days, and I have no problems, no regrets. The #1 dog to bite strangers is actually golden retrievers because they are very loyal and protective of their family.

Question!
i work full time and so does my partner, we both want a SBT,
we thought about keeping her in the garden which is fenced off, with a shed which would be just for her and insulated so in the winter it is warm, it would have a dog flap on so she could stay in or play in the garden with toys, she would be walked every morning and night.
she would be on her own for about 9 hours but most days i could pop home for 20 min to check on her.
also would it be wise having 2 to they dont get bored?
=
guess what ppl. i have been bit 6 times. nope. not once was it a pit, or a staffy, it wasnt a chow, or german sheperd.... it was a golden ret. also, a lab, and a dalmation, and a welsh corgi, and i was attacked by two akitas. yep. all dogs have the potential to bite. kids and dogs dont mix.dogs are unpredictable animals. every one of those people said there dog would never hurt even a fly,..... LIARS! the freak golden retriever just sttacked me for no reason. i was sitting there petting it for a little while, and the frek dog jumped up snarled, bit me, and layed down like nothing happened!!!!! FREAK DOG. all animals are unpredictable! just dont leave the baby alone with the dog. i cant say this enough! dont do it! supervision is the key to all.
i have to say though, all of my experiances with pits, and staffys, have been pleasant. all of them

hi can anyone help me a have a bitch staff and she keeps biting at her paws
=

kelly, examine her paws very very very well. first check out her nails. is there a crack in any of them? is anything not normal? are any of them partly detached? now examine her pads. is there anything wrong? any cuts? splinters?any clear glass? this is very hard to see , so you will really have to look. if you cant tell, the get some lotion, and lightyly massage her paws, to make the skin smoothe, so you can tell if there is anything wrong. now take an alchohol swab, or hydrogen peroxide, and swipe it over her paw. see anything? of not then you will have to feel around to see if there is anything hard. now check between her toes. see anything? feel around. if she barks or yips , or crys, or growls, then examinie that spot. you probably found it. please tell me if this works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there all, i have been very interested reading the posts here and thought i would ask a bit of advice if i may? i have had a staffy before and had a loving relationship with her and to add to a comment made earlier we had a baby newborn after we had got the dog and she was fantastic with her from the off, she used to guard the baby wherever she was and her temperement and patience was priceless so i would recomend staffys to be intergrated into a home with kids and would trust them with their lives, anyway back to my problem, my wife has recently bought me another staffy after the loss of my 1st staff "Tara" and i am concerned that i cant get her to feed regular, i have tried all methods i know and different brands of food but she tries them and then thats it, she is approaching 4mnths old and i am worried she isnt eating enough, she is well behaved and obedoent, she goes into the yard to do her business and she plays with my children really well, she seems to be really intelligent and learns things fast, she sits when i ask gives her paw for a treat but getting her to eat dog food is getting hard, please help me as i am worried she will become malnutritioned and become ill, thankyou for your time.

N?ot knowing too much about staffordshire terriers, if you buy one just before baby is born and it is just a puppy, then you surely are paying attention to it and then the baby is born and you have all your attention on new baby - do they not feel left out?? Does that not make them jealous and maybe turn

Juanita.... is you dog an A Staff or a Stafford Shire Bull Terrier ?because I noticed you mentioned ( your pit )in you last post. If you have an American pit bull terrier it is not the same as an American Stafford Shire Terrier or a Stafford Shire Bull Terrier, all three dogs are diffrent. However I do have to say all three where bread for fighting, that is why some are people friendly but dog agresive. If they show no agresion towards you than there is no need to worrie, if you have young children than I would watch him! As I said before these dogs only purpose for beeing bread was to fighting! often times they dont know the diffrence between a young child verses a small dog and will attack the child just like they would another dog.

yes staffie's are awsome family dogs, good companion dogs very playfull good with kids
=

yes staffies do love children. although my friends have just had a baby and when the dog saw how much attention the baby was getting. the dog started to self harm.to an extent that they had to give the dog away to another friend for the safety of the dog. dog is now fine and healthy but in a family without children.

My two year old son was petrified of all dogs, until i looked after my brothers Staff while he went on holiday. We are now the proud owner of one of our own. He is great with kids. I trully believe it's they way you bring them up, much like children really. If you instill violence in them you can't expect anything less.

English Staffordshire Bull Terriers are great with kids, i have had them all my life and my parents bought me my first staffy when i was around 3. They are very protective and loving, i had bunk beds growing up and he would sleep of the bottom bunk and i would sleep on the top bunk.

my staffy while on her walk today was cut above the eye by another mutt of a dog thats why when my puppy staffy grows he is going to be aggressive and i will make sure that this cunt of adog gets mauled by my bad boy. how would anybody feel if their dog got cut open for no reason all she wanted to do was play
=

in reply to the staffman you are type of person that gives staffys a bad name how can anyone say that they are going to make there dog aggressive. just because another dog was horrible to your dog, your going to make him aggressive two wrongs do certainly not make a right grow up. I hope your dog never goes for one of your children because you have taught him such wicked ways. you shouldn't be aloud to have the responsibility of taking care of a dog. what a shame when this breed is so loving.

my family have always had staffies an i can honestly say that even though the majority have a problem with other dogs, they are absolutely amazing with kids. they get very maternal and tend to mother and protect them. i was brought up with them, and many young children in my family. i wouldn't think twice about it. you will have no probs!

Basically you have to ask yourself this-
If the dog was to turn on the baby, could it do a great deal of damage, has it got the strength and the equipment?
My answer is YES, it doesnt matter if the dog hasnt bitten anyone before. How many times have you heard about a fox terrier or a poodle tearing a child to bits? NEVER
This is because fox terriers were BRED to chase small things, this is a trait thats been bred into them, and poodles have been bred to be docile, most of them are skittish and will run away if threatened.
Dogs even like Staffordshire Terriers have been bred for aggression, its in their Genes, and when it comes out, you dont get the kind of bite a poodle or fox terrier would give you. It
wont stop, till what it attacks is dead.
=
And by the way, I was standing with a neighbour one day talking and she owned a Staffordshire Terrier, a little girl, (6yr old) from our street was there, she bent down and cuddled the dog and the dog bit her face. The owners response was "He has never done that before"
You hear this all too often from any type of Bull dog owner, be it Pit Bulls, Staffordshire Terriers, or Mastiffs
=
And let me ask you all this?
Even though no one is answering me, (this is about the rudest message board I have ever been to)
Why do you have to own a Staffy, or a Pit Bull?
There are hundreds of Breeds out there? Why Why Why is what I want to know?

Here's why HIDDY you answered it yourself:
Name: Hiddy • Date: 10/14/2006 21:04:26
Staffies were bred for fighting. BUT, because of their popularity over the years as a loyal companion the aggressive gene has become a lot less previlant in the breed. They have been bred as pets far more often than a dog to be used as a guard dog.
I dont know whether you have noticed or not, but the breed has also become smaller. I have also noticed that a lot of Staffies are now treated like Lap Dogs. lol
I think they are becoming a beautiful breed. I have a friend that has a little female and she goes everywhere with him, like a child...lol I think they are nice dogs, they are definately getting better
=
i don,t claim to no it all staffy mum but to say your going to make your dog, dog aggressive is so sad. i am sorry your dog got attacked but two wrongs do not make a right how will you feel when your dog attacks another innocent dog because you have made them in your words dog aggressive. you are building up a side to your dogs personality to be aggressive and and it dosen't need to be there. I hope this aggressive side is never displayed on a child as the dog will not understand the difference of who it can be aggessive towards a dog or a child. your playing in very dangerous water. just bring the dog up to be a loving family dog.

I would make sure to get your bull when he is still a puppy. Just like any dog regardless of age make sure that you bring something home from the hospital that came in contact with the baby that you do not care that the dog plays with or whatever. When you come home from the hospital make sure to greet your dog first, they usually recommend that the mom does this since she is usually the one who is taking care of the baby more often. When either of you are holding the baby make sure to not ignore the dog. They recommend that for a few weeks after the baby comes home that when you are not playing with the baby that you are not playing with the dog as well. This will allow the dog to learn that they are still apart of the family.
My sister has a pitbull and he is great with my son and hers. He's a big baby. The boys can pull his tail, his ears, can put there hands in his mouth, can sit on him and poke him and he just lays there. He has never nipped, bite or growls. But a watch dog he is not, however he is protective of the kids. Anyone who knows him though knows that his bark is alot bigger then his bite. He has never bite anyone for walking into the yard but most people won't do this since most people are freaked out by a barking dog and because the bull has gotten a bad rap all this time.
=
ALWAYS keep them supervised. Never leave a child alone with ANY animal. Introduce them slowly , if possible through a baby gate or other enclosure until you know how the dog will react. Always ALWAYS be careful.
=
Yeah we slowly introduced my son to our Husky through a baby gate.
=
Hiddy- We don't HAVE to own them we CHOOSE to. We aren't trying to convince anyone else to own a pit we are just defending ourselves. In fact, I would not recommend a pit to most people. They are an advanced breed and only those who have been around animals and understand them very well should own one in my opinion.
Also- to your staffy comment. My little brother was bitten in the face by a Golden Retriever when he was 3. His owner freaked out and said he had NEVER done that. The dog turned on the owner when he pulled him off of my brother. There was blood everywhere-mostly from the owner.
Don't worry-my brother and the owner of the dog were both fine and, at least on my brother, there were no lasting scars. But it was definitely a scary experience and I do believe that had no one jumped in, my baby brother would have died. Of course that wouldn't have happened because my dad was just yards away and had the owner not gotten to the dog first my dad would have picked it up and slammed it so hard on the ground its brains probably would have been everywhere. He was a strong man. I would do it too if a dog were attacking my child.
=
Yeah a couple of months ago there was a little girl where the same thing happened. The little girl was playing catch like she normally did with the golden and he turned on her. She actually had to have several surgeries to correct most of the damage but will continue to have scars.
=

Poor kid. Retrievers have some of the highest bite rate statistics.

i have a 5 yr old pittbull and a 3 year old son that dog will protect that baby with everything it has got dont b afraid of him and dont listern to rumors as some people dont like them i would never even think of having any other type of dog u have to remember its all about the way u bring them up not the dog
=

dont worry that dog will b fine with your son it is how the dog has been brought up not the breed any dog can bite
=

* Any dog, treated harshly or trained to attack, may bite a person. Any dog can be turned into a dangerous dog. The owner or handler most often is responsible for making a dog into something dangerous.
* An irresponsible owner or dog handler might create a situation that places another person in danger by a dog, without the dog itself being dangerous, as in the case of the Pomeranian that killed the infant (see above).
* Any individual dog may be a good, loving pet, even though its breed is considered to be potentially dangerous. A responsible owner can win the love and respect of a dog, no matter its breed. One cannot look at an individual dog, recognize its breed, and then state whether or not it is going to attack

Congratulations on your little boy :)
As long as your staffie is well socialized with people and other animals it's amazing how loving and well behaved they can be.
I have three chrildren, 13, 3 and 1, and then 1 young staffie of 5mths (Ruby). Now i see Ruby as having a fourth child.
Now i don't mean that she sleeps in a cot and gets a bottle, but she has the same needs. she is teething at the mo so she needs to nip, bite and chew but also she needs lots of love.
I would never let my kids alone with my dog, because i know that my children will pull on her and grab her, and Ruby WIll do the same back but she has sharp teeth and lots of power.
I think it's a case of teach your children and your dogs to respect each other and you'll be fine.
They are called the 'nanny dog' but only in the right hands.
Lots of training and a close eye and you'll be fine.
good luck with your new bab x

you need to be careful bringing a baby home to a Staffordshire Terrier that already has its place in the pecking order.
Your wifes fears are totally founded. You need to implement routines and think of ways to introduce the dog to the baby NOW. Dont wait until the baby is here to start thinking about it.
=
Any dog is reason to be concerned with a new baby. Introduce them slowly and with close supervision. Staffies, in general, are very good family dogs with very high intelligence and loyalty. But, in any new situation, you should observe your dogs behavior and try to be aware of any tension. Only you know your dog...you have to be the judge!
=
maybe start putting babys toys and stuuf around the house so the dog gets used to them. maybe when the babys born and your wife is in hospital if she has to stay in you could maybe bring something home that smells like the baby and let your dog smell it. we have got 2 daogs one is a staffy and when i bought my baby home we made sure we didnt keep pushin the dog away from her, of course we made sure they didnt get to close, out staffy tends to lick alot..hehe.. hope that helps a little.
=
Just be extra careful around the breeds that have the potential to do a lot of harm very quickly....Staffies are one of these
=
Hiya,
I've Replyed before but i thought i'd add my say once more.....
I have been putting my puppy stafford (Ruby) through the Kennel clubs good citizen dog scheme. ie puppy training with a top trainer, Foundation, Brons, Silver and then Gold.
I think it is wise to train your dog.
But you also have to do the same with you children!
Dogs are not a thing that you can teach tricks too. But this is well worth doing to make sure your family and dog will live happily together, and it's fun!

Ok, now I have a question I really need answered. We have a blue pitt. He has always been wonderful around my two young children, they have jumped on him etc. On christmas he turned and bit my 2-year-old son in the face, and he had to get 3 stitches on his cheek, nothing really bad happened thank god. We are getting rid of him, and my husband wants a bull terrier, do they have a high bite rate on children?

to bad it was not you the dog bit in the face for letting you fucking kid jump on him. you dont need a dog because you dont teach your children to respect animals as animals and not toys!!!!!!!!! you are the reason dogs get bad reps. you are not a responsible owner at all!!!!! do not buy any animal you cant take care of your children!!!

to bad it was not you the dog bit in the face for letting you fucking kid jump on him. you dont need a dog because you dont teach your children to respect animals as animals and not toys!!!!!!!!! you are the reason dogs get bad reps. you are not a responsible owner at all!!!!! do not buy any animal you cant take care of your children!!! =
THANK YOU T RABBIT IM GLAD THERE ARE SOME SENSIBLE PEOPLE ON HERE LIKE YOU~~~~~~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!~~~~~~~~~~~

WOW! I was really expecting every one to get mad about my post. Well I am glad to know you agree with it. It is a shame anyone can pick up a dog and call it their own. I can't stand people who abuse and neglect the animals they own. I really can't stand people who allow the kids to miss treat them and blam the dog when it acts like a dog.(dog thought) Hell lady if your not going to get your kid under control then I will. They don't speak if they could you would hear 4 letter words all day. I keep close tabs on my kids and pets. Yesterday I lost my little puppy mind on the girls. I make them stay out of the dogs face and they know thay are not to call the dogs in a room if I am not there. I came home from the store with toys for the dogs. The dogs were not any where to be found I asked my hubby and he said "I guess they went up stairs." The girls had closed them in the bed room. I made them stand at the wall for a while and they got one of my great dog safty speeches husband included. New rule in the house is if I leave the dogs get put in the pen. I won't take any chance of the kids getting bit because I failed to do my job as parent/owner. If your kid gets bit you failed as both owner/parent! STOP blaming animals for acting like animals the fact they don't act or rationalize is what separates us! Well I could talk till I am blue in the face and some people are still to ignorant to understand. So thanks for backing me up. sorry to rant but as you can see I get a little upset about this. Thanks and have a nice day. ;-)

T-rabbit, I have read some of your posts. I agree completely with many of them. I believe it is the parents responsibilty as far their pets and their children. I know myself personaly I have tried to teach my daughter (11 now) since birth that any pet we may have are always part of the family. Whether they are dogs, cats, birds etc. That's how I was brought up! I cannot stand anyone who doesn't respect that! It breaks my heart to see any animal abused period. We used to watch Animal Cops on Animal Planet. I couldn't stomach it much. We had to stop watching it. We love all animals in our home. The only thing I truly have a hard time with is most reptiles... snakes especially. But...by no means will I intentionally harm one if not need be.
I also agree with spay & neutering. We live somewhat in the country. Some people's dogs are not locked up all the time. Including our blue healer. (she does not leave the property.) At 6 mos. old we got her spayed. I could not stand the thought of my baby getting preganant by some stray or some coyote at such a young age!! Anyway, so sorry to ramble on. You get the point. I wish I could take in all abused, unwanted etc. animals! I usually am always the one to take in the pets the family gets that they all of the sudden decide they don't want anymore! My hubby says I need to stop doing this, as they are eating us out of a house and a home! LOL

I have a male staffie. 5 yrs old. He is the best thing that ever happened to our family. I have never met a softer, mardier, more loving, loyal dog in my life. (though I must say, the majority I have met with temperments similar have also been staffies) Any dog has the potential to become viscious if not raised correctly, the fact that when staffies do turn they have the power to cause serious damage is what has given them a bad name. What we forget is it is still the owners fault, not the dogs. I have an 18mnth old daughter and to watch them together makes my heart melt. My dog litterally does 'nanny' her. If she struggles to climb on the settee he pushes her up with his nose. She can basially do waht she want's to him (pull ears/tale/fur) and he lets her and loves it!!! Obviously we stop her from doing this but she is quite sneaky and you have to take your eyes off them sometimes! Staffies do need firm training as they can be quite cheeky, more often not when they don't listen its because they don't want to not because they don't understand however most Staffies main aim is to please you and I have found that giving plenty of praise when your staffie does good is a much easier way to train than telling them off when they do wrong (not to say they shouldn't be told but a firm voice will be much more effective than shouting/hitting when you have to discipline them) If you are getting a dog and you have or are planning to have a family then my advice would be to get a staffie from a pup as you will know their background and this helps for human and dog t trust each other. Also, early socialisation with other dogs, people, children and places is the most important thing you can do to ensure that your dog grows into a healthy, stable, reliable part of the family.
