My nephew is 4. He has epilepsy which has resulted in multiple brain surgeries and a cerebral palsy diagnosis. He is a great loving child. His parents are still having a difficult time accepting and being around typical developing children. It's to the point that mentioning the name of another child can be interpreted as being intentionally hurtful towards them. They also have a 6 month old son who is developing typically. They do not live near us at this time, but were recently visiting and having to pick and choose who could visit and when, etc was upsetting. I understand they are in pain and they attend support groups. It just seems a bit extreme to me and I am trying to understand. I am not a stranger to people with disabilities. I have worked as a personal care aide in homes and am now a speech pathologist.
