Hello! I need some advice. I would like to preface my question by telling you I have never known anyone with special needs, or that has a child with special needs...so I am probably the poster child for the well-intentioned person who says something totally ignorant and stupid. I have researched a little this evening on what not to say...but I would be so appreciative of some suggestions on what I am TO say.

I found an old friend on MySpace. I looked at his page and saw he had posted pictures of his daughter, who appears to have special needs. I wrote to him and he has written me back now. He told me he is a single Dad. He didn't mention anything else about her except how much he loves her. How do I engage in conversation about his life and his daughter without being nosy or offending him?

Thank you for a new education!

I bet he'll eventually open-up about his daughter on his own without you even broaching the subject....especially if you 2 continue communicating regualrly.
