Hi Janette. New babies will cry for many different reasons and after a bit of time with your little one, you'll start to understand the language as the cries tend to differ slightly depending on their need. More often than not, newborns will cry if they're hungry, in need of comfort or are uncomfortable. If you are nursing, don't stick to a feeding schedule. If your baby is crying and unconsolable, try nursing. It was tiring at times, but my oldest nursed every two hours, for months it seemed, and this usually put an end to his crying. He wasn't overfed and he's a healthy young teen today. Sometimes rather than feeding, he simply suckled a bit, calmed down and fell asleep, taking comfort in the warmth of being held belly to belly. With all my kids, I found as SAHM mentioned, that the vacuum worked well. I don't know the name or brand of this, but friends have sworn by the calming effect a battery operated baby seat that has a soft motorized hum and vibration can have. Also, it's been some time since I've used this (youngest is 4), but Ovol Drops worked wonders for gas pains. Be sure to run it by your pediatrician first for the go-ahead. Lastly, make sure your baby is dressed in unrestricted clothing that doesn't irritate the skin, and pay very close attention to the climate, indoors and out. Newborns are not equipped to sweat the way we do, so can become overheated. As well, they are a fraction of our size, so will be affected by the cold more than us. If the crying really begins to wear you down, please see your pediatrician, midwife or nurse, for the baby's sake and yours!

My son cried and cried when he was first born and the health visitor recommended Colief drops for colic. They worked like a miracle and within 24 hours he was completely better - so long as I used them in every bottle he was fine and never looked back. I don't know whether they sell Colief in the US - have a look on the internet.

Newborn babies find it very difficult to digest lactose in milk and the Colief drops (lactase) partially digest the lactose making it easier for the baby to take. The colic pains can be caused by problems with digesting the lactose.

When my son was just a few months old and cried for no apparent reason my husband and I came up with an idea that worked wonders! We took his pacifier, wet it with water, dipped it in the sugar bowl and popped it in his mouth. He instantly quit crying.Worked like a charm every time!
