Oppositional Defiant Disorder and ADHD?

My 8 year old is seeing Child Psych Services on Wednesday, as things are becoming increasingly difficult with him. He's seen them before, but they didn't think he had ADHD.

I'm exhausted with caring for him and he just will not stop arguing and tormenting anything and everything in sight! He'd argue with a brick wall if I gave him the chance...........

They said my little cousin had it, but when I watched him after a week of a strict schedule he was acting like the rest of the kids, but as soon as his gram would pick him up....watch out, screaming throwing things, I just wanted him out of my house then......so I don't know if he really has it, or if his grandparents and parents don't know how to deal with him.....I see alot of kids really misbehaiving, sure they are different, and not all kids can be disaplined the same way, I could have Morgan crying with a look, Gabe......ggeezzzz......sometimes I thought I'd beat him! lol....but he eventually turned 4 and was a different kid.....how old is your son?

He's 8. He's been like this since he was a toddler. I try to keep on top of the behaviour, but nothing I do seems to work. He really takes the p*ss.

I doubt he'll grow out of it then, I thought maybe a stage. Is he like that in school too?

Even if I give him extra attention, he's still like it. Nothing works. I'm sick and tired of it......it's so exhausting looking after him.

School isn't too bad because he's occupied and he likes his friends. He did have probs when he first started school, but they got somebody in to help him.

i don't know anything about it, but i hope they can help you with him
i do think that people are too quick to medicate for this kind of thing, but it sounds like your son is going above and beyond normal 8 yr old boy behavior.

He runs around yellin' all the time. He NEVER gets tired!!!! He rolls around on the floor in shops 'n' stuff. It's embarrassing. I'm quite strict with him, but I get so tired and it's difficult to keep on top of his discipline when you're exhausted.

Yea, for an 8 year old that is severe, my daughter is 9 and she wouldn't dream of doing something like that, hopefully the psych guy will be able to recommend something to help.....good luck, and I'm really leaving now.

Yeah, there is something not right with his behaviour. He's so immature - it's like he's still a toddler! Imagine having a toddler for years and years and years and years........it's exhausting.

I'd do anything for some meds :-/

It's got to that stage where I just don't care what happens, I just want something to happen!!!!!!

they come out of their houses and tut, tut......but, I do try hard to see him right. He gets a good diet, vitamins, no junk etc. All I do is care for the kids.....I don't drink or let them down.....but it's still not enough for him.......he's just toooooo much!!!!!!!!!!

My son is 8 as well and has those too!! Please keep me informed, maybe we can help each other. My son is on meds for the ADHD, but I want to take him to get counseling for the ODD. Let's keep each other informed on this!!

While I am thinking about it A.S. keeping to a strict schedule does help. This is hard for me, as I am a laid back, spontaneous kind of Mom, but they need structure, extremely!!

Oh, right michelle. I didn't know that your son had this. Can you read my post in the ADHD section entitled Oppositional Defiant Disorder and see what you think about my description of his behaviour?

I am honestly at the end of my rope with it. My friend came over yesterday with her 11 year old twins and they were actually tired! I couldn't believe it!!!! Just seein' them like that! My son NEVER gets tired!!!!!!!! He just goes on and on and on and on and on..........

Name: atomic snowflake | Date: Jun 3rd, 2007 10:58 PM
I don't know what tired kids even looked like!

Name: homemommichele | Date: Jun 3rd, 2007 10:59 PM
Sure will go read it now!! I know it is frustrating. Mine just talks non stop!! If he is not talking he is humming to himself, insessantly!! I don't mind that, really, I can handle talkative. It is the oppositional stuff. The beligerance, the disobeying....ARGGGGGGH!!

We do have a set routine in the household, but I can't leave the room without him doing something to Toddles! He's just such a torment.

We can't take him out or go on holiday. I couldn't go to my FIL's funeral because of him.

yeah, my son talks and sings and fiddles with stuff all the time. He can sit still if he's on his computer, but he keeps getting off the chair to run around the room yelling.

He runs around the garden with sticks fighting with the tree!

Name: atomic snowflake | Date: Jun 3rd, 2007 11:02 PM
He talks to himself ALL the time and argues constantly. He has to be in charge of everyone too! Hands out his orders!

Name: homemommichele | Date: Jun 3rd, 2007 11:07 PM
LOL mine cannot sit without chewing his fingernails in church or Something. I am constantly on him for that! Poor Connor (the toddler) I cannot turn my back for a second or he is doing something to him, then Connor hits back...full scale fighting, always!! It is so so aggravating!!

I sooooooooooooooooooooo hear what you are saying. My hubby (when I read your sons symptoms) said "How did she get our Christopher???
When I told him you were in England he said "OMG you mean there is another one half a world away whining with a British accent"????? LOL

Name: atomic snowflake | Date: Jun 3rd, 2007 11:11 PM
*LOL*

I took Toddles into church to see the school Easter Concert and he just sat and listened! He's only 2.5!!!!! I couldn't believe it!!!!!

When I took my 8 year old into church when he was 2.5 we had to leave after 10 minutes!!!!!! I practically got thrown out!!!!!!! It was awful!!!!!!!!!
