I have to ask the parents of children with ADHD and ODD. Is it possible that these kids with this can also have ocd? My son has just started showing signs of ocd at school. He is in kindergarten and is practicing writing his letters. The teacher said if he doesn't get the letter exactly how he thinks it should look he starts erasing it and erasing it and won't stop until he thinks it is exactly perfect. I am concerned since the teacher has told him many times that it doesn' t have to be perfect as long as he tries. Is anyone else's child acting like that or having difficulties in school? Please advise, I am desperate to find out what I can do to help him.

emma30,
I have to say thanks for your input. I had a talk with my son's kindergarten teacher today and she also thinks that he is showing signs of ocd. She asked him to do some cutting and gluing and he didn't want to do it. He was afraid that he would get glue on his fingers and he didn't like that. He wanted to wash his hands. (that is new)She also told me that when he was asked to practice writing his letters if he didn't do it perfectly then he would erase it over and over again. I have been reading that kids with adhd or odd can show signs of ocd as well. The teacher is thinking of having his tss worker come to the school to work with him. I hope that this will help.

biker,
I have to ask you. Did your daughter show signs of one before the other? My son first showed signs of odd and then adhd and now ocd. I have him involved in mobile therapy and tss and that does seem to help. The tss worker helps him to learn how to deal with his anger better and in turn teaches us how to deal with him. Thanks for the information

What is tss?

zbgmsmom,
Tss is like mobile therapy. We have had a mobile therapist who came to our house but we also had a tss worker. She works on our son with his behaviors. She tries to teach him better ways to handle his anger and what to do when he is frustrated. She works with him through play therapy but also on whatever issues we are having at school. He has fine motor skills problems so she works on his cutting, pasting, holding a pencil, coloring. Sometimes it is good to have a 2nd or 3rd party come in to help them and you figure out how to deal with all that is going on. She has been a Godsend to us and don't know what we would do without her. My son loves her and they have a great relationship and I have developed a great friendship with her. I found out that the mobile therapist is there more for his emotional needs but she is there for his behaviors and that is more of what we have to work on.

Hi Kathyk

Been there- done that. Its so difficult to watch your child struggle. Has he gone through the handwashing stage? My sons ocd surfaced when he started school too- for the most part the perfectionism for his work is primarily done at home. He tend to try to 'hide it' from his teachers and peers. Keep a close eye for other signs-

My son has actually gotten worse at school in the last month or so. He has not been on his medication (we had to change doctor's and ran out)and the teacher said she can tell. He has been showing more signs of ocd. He now has to put things in groups of 3's and continues to move them around. He also has been getting in kid's faces alot more. He is picking at anything he can get his hands on. Now it is the carpet in his classroom. It is also his chin. He has to keep his hands busy. The teacher has to constantly remind him to stop. Since we are not seeing this new doctor until the end of May his behavior is out of control. I have to get him formally diagnosed with ocd, and adhd. He has been formally diagnosed already with odd. My son is not a horder (yet)ut I am watching him a little more carefully to see what comes out next. He has not done the hand washing thing yet but I am sure that is coming.
