My almost 4 year old autistic son is taking off his diaper as soon as he goes in it... needless to say, I've had to clean some very messy messes off my carpets since I cannot follow him every second. I've tried putting shorts over, but just takes them off. As he is 55 lbs, he does not fit in many onsies that would snap over. He has an aba program gong 25 hrs a wk, but unfortunately, and to my dismay, the consultant says her tutors can not help with potty training for liability reasons. Does anybody have any suggestions to get him to go on the pot. I've tried sitting him on, and he wants to get right back off. If it helps, he is almost 4, non- verbal but a few words. Thanks.

Hi Dianna!
My son is 12yrs old and I still have a problem with him getting into his nappy, but here is a few suggestions anyway!
Put bike pance over the top of nappy
All in one swim suit with zipper at back
All in one long suit with zipper at back
Velcro singlet to shorts
Press studs, velcro and zippers are a help! Hope that helps a little!
Cheers!

you can buy a sleeper and use baby safety pins so he cant take off his sleeper and if he cant take off his sleeper he cant take off his diaper

Jack's story....

After the 12 mos. vaccines my son gradually slipped into autism. He was head-banging, hand-flapping, twirling, lost speech, lost eye contact and he just withdrew.

Now two years later.... no head-banging, no twirling, no flapping, has eye contact and is starting to verbalize again. And... he has Down Syndrome to boot. :) Yes... even kids with DS get autism. Actually they get it at a higher rate.

What helped him? First I give God praise.... our son wouldn't be here without Him and we prayed and I believe He guided us. Second... supplements. Especially cod liver oil. I recommend Green Pastures CLO with the X factor. Check out Dr. Mary Megson's work on the web. http://www.diet-studies.com/megson.html Our Jack healed gradually... but he is healing. I actually had to make myself GET USED TO him not twirling everything any more!

Also check out Dr. Amy Yasko's work. www.holistichealth.com

We give Jack alot of supps - cod liver oil, probiotic, magnesium citrate, tart cherry and recently we added cilantro. He takes some other things too but each child is unique. It helps to find a good naturopathic MD or chiropractor. Don't use supps until you research things for yourself. Cilantro for example...should possibly not be used until some other detox has been done.

Don't give up. There is hope! And... I will be frank here.... many mainstream doctors know squat about how to heal autism. Don't let that throw you. There are people who do know how to help. God bless you! Love, Jack's Mom :) [email protected]

Hi, if your son is taking off his diaper then he probably doesn't want it on anymore. Try using training pants. Yes you will have to clean up more but eventually he will decide he doesn't like being wet or dirty. Also develop a toileting program at home and use a reward system. Start by putting him on the potty when he doesn't have to go and begin rewarding him for just sitting. You may then start putting him on the potty every hour. When he does use the potty, make sure he gets a big reward.
The reward will have to far outway the negative behavior. It took us quite awhile to toilet train our two boys{both autistic} It can be done don't get discouraged these guys are smart he will figure it out with your help.

When my autistic son started to take off his diapers after he soiled them it was because he did not want to go in them anymore. I leave him bottomless in the house because whenever he puts on clothes he has an accident but as long as he is bottomless he never misses.

I feel your pain! I am in almost the exact same boat. My son loves his V-Smile Pocket, it has helped him start to talk. We are still having potty training troubles but It helps to sit him on his potty chair on the toilet and let him play and forget that he is even on the toilet. If you figure anything out let me know! Good Luck
