Everyone tells me that I need to potty train my 3 year old autistic daughter. I have no idea how to even start going about it. She loves the bathroom, but doesn't understand much of what I say. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate them.

hi. Do u use PEC symbols at all? We had a sequence of symbols representing the order of events required for toileting ie a symbol for a toilet, pull pants down, sit on toilet, toilet paper, stand up, pull pants up, flush toilet and wash hands. We kept this on the wall in the toilet at home and her kindergarten. If she is unfamiliar with PEC you will have to show her the pics and then show her the actions for that pic. She will get it. We also used pull-ups for a while until she stopped wetting them, it took maybe 3 months for her to learn. She was 3 also when we toilet trained her. Mind you she is still in nappies at night time but i really dont care about that for now. Too much else going on. I also used to get her to watch me go to the toilet ( I know its gross) so that she would learn from watching me. Also dont believe that she doesnt understand much of what you say. I thought that with my girl which i think made me do more for her because its so much easier and peaceful. However the opposite had been shown to be the case on numerous occassions. I think the problems with communication can make you underestimate their intelligence. Good luck!!!
