My son Nathan is going for his second autism eval. tomorrow,(7-26). He is seeing the same Neurologist that evaluated him last summer. He is 4 and has been seeing a speech therapist since he was a little over 2 not very consitently. He is part of the special preschool program where he receives 40min.@week of speech. We started all of this at about 18mths. due to lack of speech he has never regressed he just never really acquired, his vocab. is about 20-30 words and about 10-15 daily almost always single words,eat,pee-pee and so forth. He smells everything and his behavior is close to out of control with me (mom), but with dad it's a diffrent story his behavior is bad but always controlable 1 or 2 times of no usually does the trick. His pediarician is no help no info or anything useful, his teachers are at their wits end and debating cutting his school attendance from 5 to 3days/week. He is undiagnosed and I am not sure where to turn. any info would be helpful we live in IN and are on medicaid and medicaid will only cover 2 WEEKS of speech?! WTF I am a student in nursing and a waitress so of course I have no insurance or funds to cover it myself, I fell use less my son needs my help and I don't know what to do, I am his only advocate and I'm starting to feel like I'm on the opposing team.

I have been down this road myself. I have a 5 year old daughter we found out had PDD at age 3. My best advice is take your son to a pediatric developmental specialist. Find one who has a serious background in PDD or austim spectrum disorders. Do not let them cuts his class time, this is crucial for his development. Keep him in the programs he is now in, but without a true DX he could be cut from his current programs when he gets older. My daughter has the same problems she is horrible with me, but can control herself more with my husband. I have been told from many teachers and doctors that this is very normal due to the lower pitch tones in mens voices. Many children like my daughter are very sensitive to sound, noise and pitches. My daughter also smells everything, and always tells me to smell her when she gets out of the bath tub. Do not let them cut his school attendence, but do ask that his current IEP be modified to fit his needs. The class may be to big or to distracting for his comfort. I am also without insurance as the moment since my husband lost his job this summer. One visit to Laurens doctor is a $300.00 doctor bill. Since you do have Medicaid use it to your best advantage. Under the Disabilities act the school will have to supply him with speech therapy and OT therapy. Get him a true Dx and they will have to help you with any services your son needs to function in normal school enviorment.

Jack's story....

After the 12 mos. vaccines my son gradually slipped into autism. He was head-banging, hand-flapping, twirling, lost speech, lost eye contact and he just withdrew.

Now two years later.... no head-banging, no twirling, no flapping, has eye contact and is starting to verbalize again. And... he has Down Syndrome to boot. :) Yes... even kids with DS get autism. Actually they get it at a higher rate.

What helped him? First I give God praise.... our son wouldn't be here without Him and we prayed and I believe He guided us. Second... supplements. Especially cod liver oil. I recommend Green Pastures CLO with the X factor. Check out Dr. Mary Megson's work on the web. http://www.diet-studies.com/megson.html Our Jack healed gradually... but he is healing. I actually had to make myself GET USED TO him not twirling everything any more!

Also check out Dr. Amy Yasko's work. www.holistichealth.com

We give Jack alot of supps - cod liver oil, probiotic, magnesium citrate, tart cherry and recently we added cilantro. He takes some other things too but each child is unique. It helps to find a good naturopathic MD or chiropractor. Don't use supps until you research things for yourself. Cilantro for example...should possibly not be used until some other detox has been done.

Don't give up. There is hope! And... I will be frank here.... many mainstream doctors know squat about how to heal autism. Don't let that throw you. There are people who do know how to help. God bless you! Love, Jack's Mom :) [email protected]
