I am lost and don't know what to do. My daughter is autistic among other things and her new classroom of 3 months wants to put her in a main stream class. I have a diagnosis of autism from her developmental pediatrician, but the teacher says that she doesn't show many signs of autism and that they need to make room in the class for more autistic kids. They haven't really been working with her in the classroom. All of the other kids use PEC cards and do work stations. They just let my daughter sort of wonder around the class and do what she wants. I feel like they have given up on her already. I don't think they know what to do with her and have decided to make it another teacher's problem. She is very well behaved, so I just don't understand. Please if someone else has had any of these problems let me know because I am completley at a loss.

The first question is, do you have an IEP for her and what does it say? The school really can't do what you are saying without holding an IEP meeting and discussing the change in placement with you. If they do a change in placement, which it sounds like, they really should do a full psychoeducational evaluation to figure out the least restrictive enviornment for her. Have you spoken to her SDC teacher or the school psych? If you have need more specific questions or someone objective to talk to, you can write me at [email protected]. Godd luck. In our area all of the autistic children are mainstreamed and they do quite well. We are in a rural area where there just aren't as many children with a specific diagnosis. They do provide some help for them, but it is expected that all special needs children will be mostly mainstreamed. The other children do well to help them out and mentor them. I actually prefer it because of the positive influence the other children do provide. So it might not be all bad.

My son is in special education, not an autistic classroom and he is diagnosed with autism. He does very well there and learns so much from the other children who are a little bit more advanced then him. They are wonderful role models and they really have taken my son "under their wing" They are only three and four and they talk a lot, my son can't talk on his own but can imitate and play and the other children actually do a lot of talking for him because they know he can't right now. You should have a talk with your child's case coordinater at school and let her know what you think is best for your child. You know your daughter's functioning level better than anyone else. Maybe you can go watch the other classrooms and the class your daughter is currently in and get an idea of what is better for her. Good Luck
