Hi all...My son is 18 months old. Since he was about 9 months old we noticed or I should my parents noticed that Vincent didn't recognize them or pay any attention to them when they spoke to him. At first I thought they were being silly & their feelings were just hurt because they didn't see him that often. But after bringing him to his pediatrican, and explaining these things to him, they recommended that we bring him to a neurologist. He did a few tests with him there and he agreed that there were some problems that he saw and that he might have the beginnings of austim.
After bringing him to the Neurologist she told us that he was still young and she couldn't do any proper testing on him She didn't feel that there was a problem with the Austim, but to bring him back at 18 months for a follow up and we would do firther testing. Well, he is now 18 months and he has inproved in so many ways. The major problem I see is that he will not look at me if I call his name. If he is busy doing something with a toy, or watching TV he will not break his attention to look or listen to you. He is a very affectionate child. He will seek my husband and myself out if he needs me. If he gets hurt he will find me. He laughs and plays.....But only if he wants to.
At his 18 month well check visit with my pediatrican he still feels there is a problem. But he considers Vincent a child who might be a high functional child with Austism.
My appt. with the Neurologist for the follow up isnt until 10/31..So until then have to wait.
Sorry this is so long, but I was wondering if there was anyone who has a child who has high functional Austism. What do I do & what do I expect. I am 39 yrs old and waited 37 years to have this love of my life. It is tearing me apart. What will I do if he is actually sick. Please help!!

Lisa Cavazos,
I felt compelled to write to you. I have a son, age 9, with Autism and he is also the love of my life. At about the age of 18 months, in which he never had any type of regression, but noticed he was a bit slower than other children I was around and also had some strange obsessions as starring at fans, when he began to crawl he would rub his face along the walls and was definitly not talking much or jargan talk. I did not know he had Autism at that time nor had I ever heard of Autism. I made a very wise decision at that time to enroll him in a special preschool to get services (speech, Occupational therapy and all other therapies that they had available) He was not diagnosed until he was 4. Before he was diagnosed I did alot of research to prepare myself so I would not be so devestated when I learned of the Diagosis. A child with Autism may not have all of the symptoms is why it is hard for parents and sometimes Doctors to distinguish the problem. My son is also very affectinate and outgoing but still has obsessions with things that are not normal but normal for him. It is after the 31st of October so I would suppose that you have already had the appointment for the specialtist. I hope that everything was fine but if you want to talk about anything pertaining to Autism you can reply to me and I will help the best I can. I have been to many conferences on subjects pertaining to Autism and have a lot of Knowledge. If anyone else would like some info on Autism feel free to write.

Hi My name is Mary Jane. My son Dennis is 5 years old. He has PDD NOS, a mild form of autisim. He was diagnosed at the age of 3. He had skills at 18 months to two years old and then all of a sudden lost them. I would like to talk to someone who could teach me how to deal with some of the behaviors associated with his disorder.

We have two wonderful boys, the oldest is almost 11 with a diagnosis of PPD-NOS from Vanderbilt University and another who is 9 with a diagnosis of moderate autism from the University of Louisville. Our oldest son is now in the 5th grade with very few modifications. He is making his way through life even better than some of his "typically developing" peers. In fact, he made the honor roll this year! Our younger son has not made that much progress in comparison, but his autism is much worse. After 5 1/2 years in the public school system with little progress, I took him out last year and now I homeschool him. I would be happy to chat with anyone who has any questions.
