My 3 1/2 year old son was diagnoised with autism a year ago. He had very poor eye contact and now it is improving the second doctor said he didn't have autism because of the eye contact he was holding. He couldn't finish the testing because of the frustration my son was having due to all the questions they were putting him through.. Can a autistic child have eye contact ?

I am so glad to hear this because the doctors are telling me other wise he use to not even look at me when I called his name but now he is looking at me really good now. He has all the other signs of autism and the first doctor he seen said that was what he had. Thanks for your help at least I know that I'm not alone.

Hi LeAnn, I don't think that poor eye contact alone is what is used to diagnose autism. It's diagnosed base on lack of communicative skill, lack of social skills, and odd repetitive behavior. I'm so glad that you son is having good eye contacts. My son is improving a little, but still have no eye contact often.

Hi leann, my daughter is 13 and has aspergers syndrome, and she has told me she feels uncomfortable with eye contact, so she looks just above an ear or something close, she feels comfortable with that. Hope this helps? Even though hes very young, he could be doing the same thing?

My 5 yr old is autistic and he has great eye contact, in fact he is very loving and always getting our faces to get it from us whenever we talk to him! He is a very lovable character, with loads of eye contact but most deffinitely is autistic!!!!
Also soz to but in irish amy but i am from the uk and have done early bird too.

its strange crofty that its said about our little guys that they dont tend to be affectionate, now while i know its actually physically hurts some kids to be, my little man is SO affectionate and loves hugs and kisses and cuddles, TG. Have you seen another doctor or another diagnostic team?
