I have a 3 week old son and when he was first born and breastfeeding he wasn't latching on correctly and now I have a cracked nipple. I can nurse him okay on it, it hurts at first but gets better as he eats. I was wondering if ther is anyway for it to heal!! It seems like pealing off a scab each time....how can it heal when he eats every few hours. Any ideas??

Hi Kelly.Thank you for letting me know your opinion on feeding baby breastmilk from bottle :-)
I can't give you any advice from myself but a friend of mine had cracked nipples and used cabbage leaves on them and often left them in her bra when going to bed.And believe it or not it actually worked.I've also read and heard that dabbing some breastmilk over them and leaving it dry in helps too.Or have you tried nipple shields?
hope all gets better. And congrats on the birth of your baby :-)

hi kelly, ive heard exactly the same thing although i believe its savoy cabbage that you need to use and put them in the fridge first so they are cool, and from personal experience rubbing a bit of your breast milk on your nipple will definately help my midwife advised me to try this and it worked for me,..you can get sprays and creams which help but they can be quite expensive plus most of them need washing off and reapplying after feeding which if you have a baby that feeds alot is probably going to make your nipples feel even worse!. good luck xx

Ok, havent started breatfeeding yet but What To Expect When You're Expecting is the pregnant girls bible.I was just reading lastnight what to do with cracked nipples. It says to let them air dry, even use a blowdryer, which apparently soothes them. Use lanolin (get it at the drug store). Use cool wet tea bags on them to heal. Vary nursing positions so a different part of the nipple is compressed each time. Dont favor one nipple because its less cracked...its unortunately the only way to toughen them up. Use the less sore one first though if only for 5 min because the baby will suck more vigorously when hungry. Relax before feeding because relaxing for at least 15 min causes the milk to let down, meaning the baby wont have to suck so hard. They also have over-the-counter pain meds to relieve it, taken before nursing. Hope that was helpful.

Actually it is finally healing on their own!! My DS is 5 weeks old and it is actually feeling normal again. I just tried to let it air out and dry as much as possible before putting my bra flap back up. I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone!!! Thanks for the ideas and suggestions!!

LANSINOH!!!! I tried it and afet a couple hours they were better, of course just letting the milk set on them is good too. Maybe he is n't latching correctly for future references.
