Does anyone know if it would be appropriate to get support from LLL before I deliver? I had a reduction 12 years ago and had some trouble nursing my daughter who is 10 months old now. She will be 13 months when my next daughter is born, and I really want to nurse her more exclusively and longer than with my first. I also have concerns about managing my 13 month old since I know how time consuming nursing can be in the beginning.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!! They will be very very helpful. That is what they are there for. Also call you hospital and ask if there is a lactation consultant on staff.. I had a fabulous one and it made me so much more relazed with the second one. I used to nurse my son while my daughter would sit next to me and I would her a story or color with her. Anything so she doesn't feel left out.. The other day when I was getting out of the shower my daughter asked me "Mommy is all of your baby milk gone?? HA HA

Haha - that's funny. I had a great lactation consultant with my first. I called her so many times the first week, but this time I plan on using every source of support out there. I'm determined to be successful! I'm sick of bottles and the cost of formula. My daugther will be done with formula in less then 2 months!!

missmara I cantacted a la leche league rep before giving birth to kendra. She was nice, but was not much help. She told me to give her a call after the baby was born. As you know ti is a wait and see sort of thing. The good news is that since you already nursed once post reduction odds are your second try will be even more successful. You already know that I am having some problems so I feel your pain! Honestly between the two of us I don't think that there is a lactation chick who knows more about breast feeding post reduction LOL I know that we have both done a ton of research. The things taht I would ahve done differently are 1. get a supplemental nursing system before the baby arrives. The worse thing I ever did was give kendra a bottle. now she is lazy at the breast. 2. Start w/ the herbal supplements ASAP. even if you end up with too much milk it is better then having too little. You can always stop the supplements. 3. Get a good pump and start pumping from day one. Pump after every feeding.

I can say that it feels like my life right now revolves around getting milk out of my boobs LOL, but it is so worth it. My supply had prob doubled, but it is just still not enough. I am expecting my supplental nursing system to come today or tomorrow and I hope that boost my supply more since kendra will not have any more bottles. I am going to give it a couple of more weeks before I give up. I want soooo much for breastfeeding to work, but not at the cost of it consuming my entire life :) Good luck to ya hun.

Hey missmara. did I mention before about the book I used? It is called "So That's What They're For" by Judy Tamaro. It is the best book on breastfeeding ever. I even referred to it all the time while I was nursing.... You will love it. It is not really clinical but written from a nursing mothers point of view

Thanks so much Jill. I'm really curious to hear how you like the SNS. I've heard they take a lot of effort, but that they're worth it. Also, do I have to wait until I deliver to take the fenugreek? I know I asked my doctor this once but I forget what she said! Last time I rented a pump from the hospital. I'll probably do that again - it's not expensive and they give you the Medela fancy one that double pumps. I really am so anxious to see if it works this time. This may sound weird, but I'm more excited about breastfeeding then anything else with this baby! I think because I know how boring newborns are! Especially compared to my 10 month old!
Thanks for the support by the way - I will definitely be staying in touch with you. I'm glad thinks are working themselves out with Kendra - it sounds like you have been pretty successful considering the circumstances!

bebe9281 do you get royalties from that book or something? you mention it in almost every post whether or not it has anything to do with the topic? Not being a bitch, just curious :D

Doctors can prescribe medication which will increase lactation as well as taking the fenugreek. I breastfed 10 years after my reduction.

you do have to wait to start taking the supplements. They have things in them that can cause uterus contractions. Start taking them asap though. The supplemental feeder still ahd not come. I am starting to get a bit pissed about it too. I know what you mean about being excited to breast feed. I was too. It is just so important and I think that it is even more important because we know that the odds are aganist us. I love feeding her and she picked up on it right away. I only had some mild soreness for about 2 days and since then I have been fine. I hope things work out, but I am starting to feel like "If I can't produce enough now how the hell and I going to do it when she is older and needs more milk" I hope that the supplementer works out and cuts down on the time that it takes to feed.

The more she nurses the more milk you will produce. For the first 4 weeks my son (he was 8.5lbs) nursed every 45 minutes all day every day. The all of the sudden bam! he was happy and satisfied... and I had enough milk to feed all the children in the world.

That's great to hear bebe - I think after 4 weeks I would have given up.

Jill - so do you think I should bring the fenugreek with me to the hospital and take it right after delivery? My doctor also said those vitamins called Lipil something - maybe by Enfamil - are really good for milk production too.

yes I would take it to the hospital jsut in case you end up with a c section and have to stay for 3 days like I did.

Yes, I am an LLL Leader and that would be very helpful for us to know about your situation so that it can be helped before there are problems.

Also don't start supplementing right away. That will hinder the latching process. I wouldn't even use the supplent before getting proper latching because contrary to some beliefs any supplement given will decrease your supply by that much each time. Preg Moms are always welcome at League meetings and it really does help when we can know you. Take it one day at a time. Congrats!
