Has anyone used sign language with their babies? If so, any recommendations on videos? I plan to buy a couple on Amazon. A friend suggested one, but I was wondering if anyone else had a good experience doing this.

if you find a great one mara, let me know I am interested as well, i get weekly emails from american baby.com and they have one a week but i'd like to see more than one at a time.

Hmmm...not many opinions on this! I'll go post in SAHM too. And M25 - I'll let you know which ones I buy. I've started to teach her "more" and "love", but I know the videos are supposed to help. And they say 9 -10 months is the ideal age to start. I'm hoping it helps with her grunting and pointing, cause I never know what she wants!

I plan on using sign language with my baby when she's a little older...my mom is a sign language interpreter so we have a lot of support in that! We used a little bit in the daycare I worked at, and it was great. We had a couple babies who would just shriek when they wanted food, and as soon as we taught them the sign for "more," mealtime got a lot more peaceful because they would ask nicely. I also have some good friends who have a 5 and 2 yr old, and they highly recommend it -- it helps communication with the baby, and helps them keep from getting as frustrated. Plus, once they're older, you can avoid the embarassment of "Mommy I have to go potty" being screamed across the store or wherever you are in public, because they can just sign it to you.

I read the book "Baby Signs" by Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn.. and it was helpful. I haven't seen any videos, though, other than Baby Einstein "Baby's First Signs." That one is obviously geared more for the baby to watch it, but it can teach mom and dad the signs as well.

baby sign isn't as focused on using the actual signs for things, more just having A sign for them...but you can use regular sign language with them, and that way they're learning another language at the same time. I plan on using ASL signs with my daughter, so that she has the base to knowing both ASL and English. They say the best time to teach kids any second language is while they're really young!

Oh, and yeah, it's basically what's in Meet the Fockers

I think it is like in Meet the Fockers! And I think the signs are the same as ASL, but you focus on 3-5 signs at a time, and you show the video everyday and of course the signs are geared towards a baby. Some of the common signs that you start with are: more, eat, drink, please, thank you, change (as in change a diaper) and then of course you just add from there!

The "Baby Signs" book that I mentioned just stresses that you and baby have a sign that you both know means something...sometimes they're ASL, sometimes they're not. But if you want, you can make sure the only signs you demonstrate are ASL, and then that's what your baby will pick up

Oh and the reason it's so helpful is because a baby can actually communicate with their hands long before they can talk, so it helps frustration on the baby and the parents. Rather than have Sophie launch her cup across the room when it's empty, she could just sign "more" or "drink".

Yeah - Sophie made up her own sign for "pick me up", but I think most of the videos are based on ASL, and of course it's universal so it's helpful for grandparents or other caregivers if you use a sign that everyone knows.
