ok so we're going camping at the lake over Labor Day weekend.....we have camped plenty before but I still loath cooking while camping......it's a pain for one to get the darn dishes cleaned from cooking, plus your limited on what you can make. Here are a few of my camping staples:

hot doga
brats
velvita shells mac and cheese
sandwitches
poptarts
snacks
smores

I have cooked other things before but it always seemed a pain or didn't turn out right.

Do any of you guys have any EASY fun kid friendly camp food ideas........oh and we're expecting upwards of 25 ppl.....it may as well be called a family reunion. I'd like breakfast, and dinner ideas.

well my only experiances camping were with the girl scouts and the marine corps....but i know with the girl scouts we would make individual pine apple upside down cakes...in tuna cans...it was really good. you put a slice of pineapple on the bottom and a cherry and then pour the batter in the can then cover with tin foil and put over the flame somehow...its yummy,,

but other than that i am no help...

Maybe a dense question...but what will you be cooking on?

Open flames or would ya'll have one of those portable stove tops?

How about banana fritters! They are soooo yummy and sweet. That a different kind of breakfast food. And its super easy.

Depending when you plan on making it buy under riped bananas so when you decide to make them they are just right.

Slice the bananas.

And in a bowl put some fllour, sugar, and salt. Mix those together. Dip the banana slices in the micture and coat them.

Then put them in a hot panin with a little bit of oil. They take about a 2 min a side, if even that. Just until they are brown.

Drain them on a paper towel, and top with syrup.

Thats a yummy idea Danese!

Yannick that sounds so good just to even eat on a reg. basis! We will have a very very lg. grill that we kept from when we had our party rentals business, and we will have open fire, and someone else is bringing out their RV so we'll possibly have a reg. kitchen as well......but it's small and awkward, so I imagine most of the cooking will be done outdoors.

My family goes camping alot, and we NEVER have burgers or hotdogs, We have steak past a salad home made ice reream, its gormete cooking when we go camping, there are tons of ideas online you jsut have to look around!

We Make orange cake, where you take an orange and cut the top off, like a lid and scoop out all the pulp and mix white cake batter and pour it it put the lid back on wrap it in tin foil and place it on the coals! its soo easy and soo good!!
any you make ice cream using 2 coffee cans and its great for the kids to do !

we also have pankackes egs bacon sausage, any thing that we eat at home we also eat while camping, we cook on the grill, the camp fire or a butane cook top stove!!

and one of my favorites its the meat loaf thing you take meat loaf and make it into a burger patty shape then you pile carrots, onions and potato slices on top wrap it in tinfoil with your seasonings and maybe som butter and put it on the coals! its soo good~!!!

Ok speaking of hot coals from Lauren's post.

Baked potatoes!

Rub some oil on the skin and shake some salt on it. Wrap it in foil paper. Put in on some hot coals! Ta-da, bakes potatoes.

But it might take awhile to cook through.

Sounds like fun, now I want to go camping, lol.

Oh wow Lauren.........thats some serious c0ooking!!!!.......Tell ya what you can come and cook for us!!!! Lol, yeah steaks are one of my favs. but w/ that many ppl coming I think we'll stick with easy. but I am seriously considering the orange cakes and the ice cream already googled it! I have some sort of menu drawn out for my family, I think the way they are doing it is kinda weird we should draw up a main menu and everyone contribute $. They told me not to worry about food, but I want to make sure my kids get fed stuff they like and as much as they want, so I wanna have my own back up menu, because no one is co ordinating food..........but I'm a dork I guess, I have to have everything planned out and organized or I panick! If I go home with unused food thats ok w/ me as long as it doesn't spoil. But if I need meal ideas I want a back up plan.........make sense?

Anything you can cook at home you can cook on the campfire. We do everything on the campfire with the exception of boiling water we we don't want to wait, we rip out the backpack stove for that (propane one burner). When we go we always have bean soup (soak beans overnight & cook all day) & cornbread one night. Hobo stew, boy scout standby, you take ground meat and mix vegetables and seasoning and wrap in tinfoil and cook. This one is fun for the kids, prep all of the veggies before going and give everyone a packet with meat and let them go at it. I like gr turkey, potatoes, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, corn, string beans with worshishire, garlic salt & pepper. You get the picture gr meat with whatever you want. If you do the potatoes it is best to par cook them first so that the dish cooks faster (everything ends up done with hard potatoes if not).
My favorite campfire dessert is the cobbler, another boy scout favorite. It takes a can of pie filling, fresh fruit, yellow cake mix & a stick of butter. In a dutch over, you put the pie filling in first then the cut fruit, followed by the cake mix & finally crumble the stick of butter on top. I use peach pie filling from Cracker Barrel & cut strawberries up.
For breakfast we do the normal stuff, omelets, biscuts & gravy, pancakes, bacon, cream of wheat, oatmeal.
I hope you have fun sounds like a blast!
