When did everyone start giving cereal?

I've heard you can officially start at 3months, but my pedi gave me some info and we talked i'm thinking i'll wait until Christian is 6 months.

I told a few people at work and they looked me like i had 3 heads....

Any thoughts?

Think most books/docs these days say to wait on soilds till 6 months. I started with cereal at 3.5--but Kaden was READY! I think it depends on the child and what the moms want---I don't think there is a right or wrong there.
And Randi will say don't start with cereal anyways, right Randi! :)

I've always heard 6 months to start cereal. My nephew is a little over 6 months and just started cereal, the pediatrician had me give it to my son at 2.5 months because he had horrible reflux and couldn't keep his bottles down. Nothing wrong with waiting.

Hahaha yeah, I will Candice. I think I have exhausted myself though on that subject. I personally would not start my kids out on the cereals. I started my Kaden on avacado and banana. He is a great eater and I give him oatmeal occasionally, but I think it's a big waste of time to feed the cereal and it's not good for them.

Oh, I started my son on solids at 3.5 months as well. He was definitely ready early.

6 months is a great time to start. I also waited until 6 months. At this age it is for practice and not nutrition so there is no real reason to push food yet.

When should I introduce solids?

You can introduce solids any time between 4 and 6 months if your baby is ready (see "How will I know when my baby's ready," below). Until then, breast milk or formula provides all the calories and nourishment your baby needs and can handle. His digestive system simply isn't ready for solids until he nears his half-birthday. Waiting until your baby is ready greatly reduces the risk of an allergic reaction and shortens the transition time between spoon- and self-feeding.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies be breastfed exclusively for at least six months — though parents will attest that some babies are eager and ready to eat solids earlier.

At our 4 month appt. the Dr. said not to start solids until 6 months and if I do start before then only ceral and to treat it like a dessert and not as a meal of any kind.
But lots of ladies in my mommy group have started their kids much earlier. My girls very healthy and gaining lots of weight, I don't think she needs it yet, she does just fine on formula.

I tried cereal for Ian at 3.5 months but he hates it. He's 4.5 months now and is on fruits and loves it. He just has a 1/3 of a jar each night just to get him to try it so it's a minimal part of his diet right now

I honestly think whenever they're ready! I was told to wait until 6 months but I took it upon myself to start when he was ready. My Christian turned 6 months old today and I have been feeding him cereal for about 3 months. If he's drinking the bottle regulary like every 3 or 4 hours then there's no need to hurry solids.

It is honestly up to you and if he is ready. I had to put it in kendra's formula from about a month old or so. She had very bad reflux. I started feeding her soilds once a day at about 4months. now she will be 6mo on the 18 and she eats 2-3 tiems per day. IT has alot to do with when their reflex to push their toung out goes away so that they can swallow the food.
