Coartney, Instead of taking iron pills go buy a cast iron skillet or pan and cook all your food in it.You will get alot of iron this way. Also green leafy veggies and raisins are high sources of iron.I ofet put the raisins in my oatmeal since I eat alot of oatmeal....LOL I have been anemic since long before pregnancy and have been learning other ways to eat iron because the pills and even my prenatal vitamins make me soooo sick,on top of the fact that I am pretty much sick all the time now anyway...

i was told i eat one bowl of total a day, thats 18mg of the 30 i need. and then the rest of the day just eat other foods with iron in it. spinach only has 4% iron. i was told i could eat these health bars that have 15% iron.. either way ill get it. thanks for the suggestions, at first i thought you were being a smart ass with the cast iron skillet lol

Coartney,
Just thought I'd let you know, spinach contains oxalic acid (sometimes referred as oxalate). Oxalic acid binds with iron, hence inhibiting its absorption.
You do not need to give it up if you are a spinach lover! Simply eat spinach with any foods containing iron absorption enhancers. Here are some examples:

Meat/fish/poultry
Fruits: Orange, Orange Juice, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapefruit and other Vitamin-C rich fruits
Vegetables: Broccoli, brussels sprouts, tomato, tomato juice, potato, green & red peppers
White wine

Oxalic acid irritates the lining of the gut when consumed, and can prove fatal in large doses. I'm sure you won't die as I don't think there's enough of the acid in spinach to death....lol.....but it could irritate your gut, if you don't eat something else with the spinach!! hope this helps! :-)

haha alot of studies say that dairy interacts and doesnt allow the iron to absorb either, which is stupid. and yeh my doctor suggested spinach and i was like uhm except i wouldnt be getting much iron from it lol.. hell ill eat my total raisin bran, 100% iron LOL. 2 bowls of that a day and thats 36mg LOL
