At my antenatal class yesterday, the midwife was discussing episiotomies (cutting!!!) and I was just wondering if anyone here had one, and is it as sore as I could imagine. Only I'm having a big baby, and I'm a slim person, which makes me a candidate for one all going badly. Ek!

i didn't have to be cut i tore....but i only had to have 5 stitches, so it wasn't that bad. mine was sore but not that bad unlike some women who have to have more.

Hey Briseis, Although episiotomies sound gross and I'm sure that studying the 'how toos' of the actual cutting must be mortifying (I never read that chapter of the book for that reason exactly!!) its really no big deal. Once you've given birth--or are giving birth you wont really be tuned in to whats going on 'down there' and the episiotomy may actually feel to you as a relief if it means helping the baby get out with out the burning stretch without it. I had 4 stitches (from episi) with my first and torn slightly, enough for two stitches) with my second so I'm not sure how it feels differently to heal without stitches but aslong as you use the squirt bottle they give you after delivery to help clean off any dried blood it should heal really easily.
Its funny though, getting super-prepped for giving birth by watching videos and actually 'seeing' what happens 'down there' is WAY different than actually being the one lying on the table- After my two girls deliveries I watched a friend deliver at a home birth and watching freaked me out WAYYYYYYY more (the stretching and impossiblity of how it seemed uh......fitting-wise!) than actually doing it! I'd rather have been giving birth again! Try not to think about the pics you see or the facts you know--its much easier to just concentrate on giving birth on how YOU feel it happening.

believe it or not, your body size doesn't have much to do with it. my clothing size never changed with my son or with this pregnancy. i still got my maternity in a 2 or xs (extra small). so, body size isn't it. to prove it, my son was 9 pounds, i didn't have an episiotomy NOR did i have to be cut! i guess it just has alot more to do if you can stretch real good down there. plus, my obstetrician kept doing the perineal massage thing off and on throughout my labor and pulling (i know this sounds gross) on my vaginal opening and making it stretch and getting it ready. so, believe it or not, i think that is what really helps. i highly recommend the perineal massages to any woman that is in labor. i think you just have to ask about it. good luck, i hope you don't have to be cut or tear.

i didnt have one. my doctor said if you cut, just leaves more chances for it to rip more. i got one stitch with a 8 lb baby

OMG! I AM STARTING TO GET SCARED AGAIN NOW! I REMEMBER HOW SORE I WAS DOWN THERE. IT HURT TO PEE AND POOP. WHEN I WOULD BATH, I WOULD JUST SIT IN THE WATER, I COULDN'T EVEN PUT SOAP ON MY WASHCLOTH. I WOULD JUST TAKE THE WARM WATER ON MY WASHCLOTH AND PAT DOWN THERE. I HATED THAT B/C I DIDN'T FEEL CLEAN AFTERWARDS. AND THEN THAT WATERY BLOOD THAT YOU HAVE AFTERWARDS AND THOSE BIG ASS BULKY PADS THAT ARE SO LONG, THEY FEEL LIKE THEY'RE STICKING OUT YOUR DAMN PANTS IN THE BACK!

OH MAN, I'M REALLY GETTING SCARED AGAIN.

i was really sore down there for almost 2 weeks, but i would of been way worse if i tore!

i would get one if the time comes when you need one

YEAH COART, I ALWAYS THOUGHT THE SMELL REMINDED ME OF METAL OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. (THIS IS THE AFTER YOU GO HOME, THE HEALING PROCESS, NOT THE DELIVERY ROOM).

I secon the nasty blood smell. It is even worse since you haven't had to smell it in 9 months. It wasn't too bad with kendra, because the bleeding was light, but I bled off and on (more on) for 3 months after jeremiah and it was the worst.

YEAH, I'M LIKE "IS THIS MY PERIOD OR WHAT?" I THINK ITS MORE LEFTOVER BLOOD THATS GETTING CLEANED OUT FROM THE DELIVERY. I DON'T KNOW. BUT I HATE THAT SMELL. IT ALWAYS MAKES ME FEEL SELF-CONCIOUS AROUND MY HUBBY, ESP. SINCE YOU CAN'T WASH DOWN THERE REAL GOOD LIKE YOU WANT TO.

I had one and had such a big baby i actually tore down into my rectum as well (its only been 3 weeks since ive had my baby) it doesnt hurt to get cut... i think its better than to tear.. it did hurt to get stiched back up but that could be because my pain medication was wearing off as I had to start pushing and because I tore down into my rectum. Afterwards can be rough especially if you get a hemroid like I did... You can barely sit down.

oh and my baby was 9lbs 2.5oz... so he was pretty big

and thats why i didnt get cut, you tend to tear more b.c you've already started it off

I actually tore and didn't even know the doctor had told me I didn't feel it at all and my baby wasn't even big he was 7lb 5oz. My friend had to be cut her baby was 9lbs..

ya i got a hemorrhoid too it was sore, but is gone now, i hope it doesn't come back, i saw it when i got home i got a mirror to look at my stitches, it was bruised but its all good now

I didn't look at anything. I didn't look in a mirror during my birth, didn't really pay much attention to the birthing videos in class (I'd seen them already in 7th grade) and I didn't check out my tear or stitches afterward. I didn't want to see any of it!

im pretty slim and tiny too and my daughter was 8 pound 2 which was really big for me..i didnt rip or tear or need an episotomy. Just listen to the midwifes and doctors they are awesome when everything happens and just go with the flow. dont be scared though. I walked around on my tip toes for about 4 days after i gave birth because it was my bum that was so sore!

I tore really bad and my baby girl was only 6 pounds 6.5 ounces. I didn't ask how many stitches I got because I was in so much pain. They doctor kept putting the needle through the part of my skin right near my behind and it hurt like hell.
