My neighbor mentioned giving her kids water when they were infants and said I should try giving Jasmine water. Is she too young for water (or is there an age at all). If she's not, how much and how often should she get it? It is a one a day thing... or every feeding thing... I have no idea how to go about it. Anyone have any ideas?

things have changed since your neighbors children were infants -- like coart said, there is water in formula...jasmine gets all the water and nutrients she needs from that. When she's older (well after you start with solid foods) you can give her water in a sippy cup to get used to the cup. But definitely not now!

If it's super hot you can add a little bit of extra water, but other than that I would not, and I would ask a nurse for how much to give. I know we were told to add an extra ounce of water, but now he is on a lot of solids, so I give him pureed fruit with water added. His fave is canteloupe.

i give xylea 1 - 4 oz of water a day only because sometimes she dosent want her formula but she will drink some water. we went to a market day here and were out at 12pm so it was hot and she got fussy and i gave her a bottle but she refused so i gave her a bottle of water and she downed it. i asked the dr and she said that she does get the water she needs in her bottles but extra water will not harm her. just make sure you are not giving her more water than you do formula. xylea can drink 4oz of water 2 hours after she drinks her formula bottle and 2 hours after her water bottle she gets another formula bottle so as long as your baby is not filling up on water before her formula feedings than its fine but thats just what my dr told me.

Brandiss, water can be harmful. You are not supposed to be giving them that much. That's why I said to ask someone first. There is no nutrients in water, so she is filling he tummy up with nothing. Too much water can also throw off the electrolyte/sodium leves in their bodies as well.
It's called Oral Water Intoxification. It can cause seizures and other stuff. They don't recommend water until after the baby is on solids. If your baby needs a drink I would give it pedialyte... I forgot how young your baby was Jasminesmommy

Here is some info on water intoxication

Water intoxication is most commonly seen in infants under six months of age and sometimes in athletes. A baby can get water intoxication as a result of drinking several bottles of water a day or from drinking infant formula that has been diluted too much. Athletes can also suffer from water intoxication. Athletes sweat heavily, losing both water and electrolytes.
Water intoxication and hyponatremia result when a dehydrated person drinks too much water without the accompanying electrolytes.
What Happens During Water Intoxication?

When too much water enters the body's cells, the tissues swell with the excess fluid. Your cells maintain a specific concentration gradient, so excess water outside the cells (the serum) draws sodium from within the cells out into the serum in an attempt to re-establish the necessary concentration. As more water accumulates, the serum sodium concentration drops -- a condition known as hyponatremia. The other way cells try to regain the electrolyte balance is for water outside the cells to rush into the cells via osmosis. The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from higher to lower concentration is called osmosis. Although electrolytes are more concentrated inside the cells than outside, the water outside the cells is 'more concentrated' or 'less dilute' since it contains fewer electrolytes. Both electrolytes and water move across the cell membrane in an effort to balance concentration. Theoretically, cells could swell to the point of bursting.

From the cell's point of view, water intoxication produces the same effects as would result from drowning in fresh water. Electrolyte imbalance and tissue swelling can cause an irregular heartbeat, allow fluid to enter the lungs, and may cause fluttering eyelids. Swelling puts pressure on the brain and nerves, which can cause behaviors resembling alcohol intoxication. Swelling of brain tissues can cause seizures, coma and ultimately death unless water intake is restricted and a hypertonic saline (salt) solution is administered. If treatment is given before tissue swelling causes too much cellular damage, then a complete recovery can be expected within a few days.

Your baby should get enough water from formula or your breast milk, the only time you should give them water is when they are i think one or when or if their poop is more on the solid side, that means that they aren't getting enough water.

there are no nutrients in water

Like everyone has said there is no reason to give water at all, but doctors differ about rather it is "safe" the theory is that the baby will not get the nutrients he/she needs since they are full on the water. Also like randi said they become water toxic (that usually takes quite a bit of water though) My dr told me to give kendra about 1/2 - 1 oz of water after she eats a bottle with rice in it. This is to help make sure that she gets it down all the way. she has reflux though so there is a medical reason for it. I don't give it to her unless I notice her gagging after a feeding, and I only giver her rice at night when she will be laying down, instead of in every bottle like the dr said to do. Also I give her a small amount of water in a fast flow nipple when she gets the hiccups. If I don't she will keep them for hours. So to make a long story short don't give water unless your dr tells you to for a medical reason. Usually even after they are 4-6mo and eating dr want the water to be limited since the main source of nutrients should still be form breast milk or formula.

but i dont give her multiple bottles of water a day. sometimes she dosent even drink water for a couple of days. i just give it to her when she is constipated or she hasnt had a #2 in a day. but thanks for the advice, it kinda scares me but i havent given her water in a couple of days.

oh yeah teh dr did say "well since she is 2mo and over 10lbs you can give her some water to help the rice go down" I am assuming that if given prior to two months it would be more dangerous

i will try to give her water but sometimes she dosent take it i will not be doing this anymore.

Brandiss
well babies don't get "thursty" but I know when it is hot out kendra doesn't want much formula. I have found that she will drink it better on a really hot day if I make it a bit cooler then normal and add anout 1/2 oz extra water to thin it out a bit. Also it is ok to give the babies water when they are constipated. kendra used to have to get 1oz w/ a TBS of brown surger 3x's a day when we were going through her drama. So if she has trouble pooping then that is a reason to give it to her and is ok. don't feel like it is going to hurt her, it jsut isn't necessary to give it to them for no reason. I am sure that you are doing fine.

if she is having trouble going to the bathroom, then her formula is too thick, so add a little bit extra water in her bottle with the formula to thin it out, there is no need for a whole new bottle of just water.

also about the constipation, babies dont always go once a day. if it goes past 3 days, thats when you can give them water or pedia, but you're supposed to let the doctor know first.

the doctor always told me that it doesn't matter how often they poop but the consistency....a baby can go a couple of days with no poop as long as the poop is soft and not hard and the baby doesn't seem in pain or anything they are not constipated and you have nothing to worry about

my Dr also told me to give Olivia water, she said 60mls a day. told me to give her cooled boiled water.
That info on water intoxication freaked me out!

well my daughter is regular and goes once a day, i called the dr yesterday and asked her about this and she said as long as i am not giving her multiple bottles of water a day and no more than 8 oz a week she will be totally fine.

Name: Randi | Date: Jun 20th, 2007 2:42 PM
Well you said you would give her a 4 oz bottle of water and then give her formula later. You also said you give her 1-4oz of water a day, so that's why I brought it up.

Name: mizzescalante | Date: Jun 20th, 2007 2:48 PM
well i ment that she will either get 1 to 4 oz a day. she normaly just wants like 1 to 2 but sometimes she wants 4oz and sometimes she wanted none. all this crap scared me and she will no longer be given no more that 1 to 2 oz a day, if she wants it.

thanks randi for the info because i had no idea that it could get this bad. i just thought since sometimes she wanted it more than formula she was dehydrated or just wanted to quinch her thirst.

No problem. A lot of people don't know and "back in the day" everyone gave their babies water not knowing. I used to get pushed hard by my inlaws to give him water. Even now at 6 months, he barely gets any extra. I usually mix it with cantelope puree or in with his formula... or I will give some to him in a cup after he has had cereal or avacado.

You can give her pedialyte Brandiss. That will rehydrate her without diluting her system. That's what it is meant for. I also give Kaden the pedialyte freezies when it is hot out.

WELL I HAVE PEDI AND I BET SHE WILL LIKE THAT MORE THAN WATER. SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA. THANKS.
