A friend of mine has just discovered she is pregnant- she has been trying to conceive but she smokes. Now that she knows she is pregnant she wants to quit but says "it's a shock to the baby to quit cold turkey. I learned in school that you should quit gradually, over a months time".
Does anyone know the facts here? My understanding is the main thing - especially in early pregnancy is smoking creates a lack of oxygen because of the Carbon Monoxide in smoke, and that is initially the real harm. So how could not quiting right away be "a shock to the baby"? She's only about 4 weeks pregnant. Without getting religious, at this point we are talking about a group of cells & a nerve cord. How could suddenly quitting be a shock to the baby? I would imagine it would be a good shock if any!

Does anyone have clinical info on this ?

I DO NOT HAVE "CLINICAL INFO"...but I have had 3 boys, and each time, I was smoking & quit cold turkey everytime I found out I was pregnant, and all three of them couldn't be more perfect! I have never heard it is a shock to the baby. Do a search on google....maybe webmd.com has some info?

I THINK "A SHOCK TO THE BABY" MEANING BECAUSE SHE IS NOT VERY FAR ALONG AND THIS IS SOMETHING HER BODY IS USED TO "SMOKING" THE FIRST 13 WEEKS OF PREGNANCY ARE THE MOST CRITICAL FOR THE BABY AND MOM AND HER JUST WIPING IT OUT COLD TURKEY COULD STRESS HER OUT THERE FOR STRESSIN THE BABY OUT AND STRESS IS 100 TIMES WORSE THAN WHAT THEY ARE BOTH USED TO "THE SMOKING" ALTHOUGH THE BABY MANOT BE MUCH YET BUT AN EGG THE BABY COULD WITH DRWAL ALSO JUST AS THE MOM WILL AND ITS NOT GOOD FOR EITHER ONE OF THEM

April I gave up soda with caffeine too but I drink Tropicana lemonade and pink lemonade and it doesn't have any caffeine and it tastes soooo good maybe you can try that b/c I dont have headaches. I dont think its the lack of caffeine gives you headaches I think it is the lack of sugar. Also you can drink soda while pregnant but limit yourself to 2---12oz cans a day. And drinking lots of coffee can cause you to miscarry.
