I have a baby girl ♥Farah♥ who was born on June 23rd. Anyways her nails are kinda long and she scraches herself, mainly her face, when she gets fussy. The doctor told us not to cut her nails yet, and to keep socks and mittens on her hands. Well the weather here is up to 100 degrees during the day (I do keep my apt. at 78 to 77 though) I just want to let her little hands get some fresh air, since they're peeling too, and not be all clammed up. Her doctor also said to keep her in long sleeve clothing and all covered up all the time because she said they have poor circulation. This might be the case but there are times when I have just a onsies on her and she'll fall asleep on me and where our bodies were touching she's all sweaty.
Her doctor also said that I need to go "empty" my breast so that it didn't get ingorged, but I read that your breast is never really empty cause there's always one more drop, plus isn't a "supply and demand" type thing? You'd think if I emptied it all the way that It would just come back even more.
It's tough being a new mom and wanting to do things the right way. Also tough getting the right information. That's why I'd rather ask experience mothers on what they've been through. Sorry this is long and I'll appreciate you're answers if you understood my rambling...gotta type cause you never know when they'll wake (

I hated to see those little scratches on my sons face too. You are supposed to wait a couple weeks to trim but I think it is okay to file them a little, its easier when they are sleeping. I never put my little ones in long sleeves during the summer, just a oneies, I just watched their coloring, when their skin starts to look mottled or blotchy, I covered them up with a blankie or added a layer. The peeling is normal, after all baby has lived in water the last 9 months, don't bathe baby everyday, 2-3 times a week is good for now, and use baby lotion to keep her skin hydrated. As far as emptying your breast, I don't, and never did. It is a supply and demand and you are right it is never completely empty, so whats the point! And as long as you are switching sides you should be fine, hope I helped. Remember laundry, dishes, cleaning can wait just take care of you and baby, they grow so fast, enjoy it and when someones offers a hand, take it!

I trimmed my babies but while she was asleep so I didnt pinch her lil fingers(I have done that once and omg I felt bad). As long as you dont cut them too short or while she is awake you should be fine.

I have never heard that you are not supposed to cut babies nails right away......I cut my sons at about 2 weeks old because they got so long they started to fold over.

With my son I just used a baby file to file them down so that he wouldn't scratch himself. I tried mittens but he kept knocking them off so I finally just filed his nail. I too never dress my son in long sleeve clothing during the summer. He pretty much lived in onesies. The peeling as mention by firewife is completely normal.

Thanks everyone, I actually ended up filing her nails when I was breastfeeding her. She was so good, she let me hold her hands and get both sides, with that said I just love my bobby pillow! It makes breastfeeding so much more comfortable. I can actually read when I breastfeed, my baby books that is!

I recieved a bobby pillow for a baby shower gift with my first baby. At first I wasn't sure about it but in the end I came to believe it was the best invention ever. Regardless of whether your breastfeeding or not this is the greatest.

When all of mine (4) were born it was fall/winter time so of course i thought i had to keep them buddled up... Well they would get fussy and uncomfortable because they were too hot. My Pedi told me to dress them like i would dress myself with maybe only one more layer than what i may do (ie:onsie under the clothes) He also told me to feel the back of their necks and that was a good indication on if their little bodies were too warm. You're the mom do what you feel is best for your little one... In the summer i'd put a sleeper without anything else underneath just to keep her warm but not hot... That' s what i would do.. Best Wishes!!

To answer your questions... yes mitts are a good idea... try putting lotion on her hands before you put them on it will help lock in the moisture. I do not believe you need to put long sleeves on a baby in 100 degrees that is ridiculis. Of course you want to keep them warm but think of it this way.. if you are hot more than likely she is hot. As far as your breast... if you are not breast feeding it will not v=come back... I know what you mean and it makes no sence but its true I had 2 so far and diddnt breast feed... but to warn you I dont know if it has started yet but it can be very very painful. Try standing in the shower an applying slight pressure to your breast to relieve some of the milk. It takes what seems to be forever but it really will be gone soon!

AHHHH! Farah! Congratulations! I'm so happy you have your little girl! I too had mine! Paige was born June 27th @ 2:51am weighing 8lbs 10oz and she was 20 inches long! She's a handful but it's been fun and a learning experience. Right now she's giving us trouble sleeping at night and then she'll be out all day so we're trying to break her of that but it's hard. I haven't had a chance to post on here since she was born so when I got on here and saw this post I just had to pop in! Best of luck to you and Farah!

Hey Diamond my little one does the same thing but in just the week 1/2 that she's been here the nights have gotten better. If you can try and nap during the day at least once or twice when she does. That's some good advice that really makes since so that when your little one does get up at night and wants to feed or nurse you won't be so tired and can actually injoy eachother. Everyone keeps telling me that I'm setting myself up for a spoiled baby because at night I sleep with her usually in the recliner or the couch (after she's done nursing I flip her over to burb her and she falls asleep that way) so then I do to once I know she's secure and won't fall once I fall asleep. I just can't help it, it's the only way at night time that she'll stay asleep, during the day though I can lay her in her bassinet or the couch and she'll just sleep soundly without me. Oh well, I don't believe that you can spoil a newborn, yes it's true she cries for me but I consider that I need and not just a want!

get the nail file that looks like card board and sand paper (emery board) and file the nail without cutting them.
